From my experience, there isnt a learning curve, its simple being able to open your eyes underwater. I can open them in swimming pool as well as the sea.
When you first start, your just afraid to get water in your eye, but slowly you get used to it, and that is all.
Its easy pulling pranks in the water when you can see underwater. 
That really was the reason i started to learn it as a kid, scaring people by knowing where to pop up, that with also holding you breath for a long time to close the distance like a submarine

They are simply confusing the rotation of the earth (i.e. i see the sun then i dont see it, so its one day.)
