#2 It is great fun. I would advise you to get some padlocks or old cylinders from a locksmith to practice on, before you try to pick locks in your house.

Depending on the quality of the lock the manufacturers might have put in some nasty features like spools and serrated pins, that need special treatment.

If you want to know more about the specifics this is a good starting spot

#6 "Der Spiegel" basically is a tabloid in disguise that generates income with exiting news-stories. There are however news outlets like "Die Zeit" or "FAZ" who have a loyal peer group of subscribers who value quality journalism over action news. These publications where quick to point out the misleading interpretation of the word "bad" by "Der Spiegel".
The problem is less "the media" but rather the consuming behavior of the audience. What good is rigorous journalism if people prefer to share emotional bullshit-articles on social media instead?

#13 You are over-complicating things.

Fist of all: 2*V=D/(0.5*T) and 2*V = 2*D/T is exactly the same thing (1/0,5=2) ;)

The question asks for the average speed for one or two laps repectively, with each lap run with a constant speed as calculated by (total distance)/(total time).

It is really unambiguously worded.

after one lap that average speed is D/T1 and after the second it's 2D/(T1+T2)

That leaves you with the problem

2D/T1 = 2D/(T1+T2)

solve that for T2 and you realize that you're screwed

Lets follow your logic:
V2 = 3*V1

D/T2=3D/T1

that means
T2=1/3*T1

And the average speed becomes
Va= 2D/(T1+T1/3)= 2D/(4/3*T1) = 3/2*(D/T1)

but we are looking for Va=2V1=2D/T1

Don't worry to underststand this substitute wheel stuff I dreamt up, if mechanics is unknown territory for you. Not sure if my explanation even made it harder to understand ;) Some graphics would help a lot.

Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

+1 14. kirkelicious commented 7 years ago on video 4 Revolutionary Riddles Resolved!

#8 It gets easier to understand if you imagine the pedals to be another wheel that is fixed on the same axis as the back wheel of the bike. Forget about the chain and the gears for a moment. You could just as well change the diameter of the "pedal wheel"to alter the transmission ratio. Change the lever length - change the torque. Simple mechanics.
In a very low gear the Pedal wheel would be bigger than the real wheel, which conveniently leaves with the model of the train problem. You pull the pedal backwards, the bike rolls forwards.
If this pedal wheel has a smaller diameter the direction of motion is the same for the pedal and the wheel. therefore pulling it backwards makes the whole system slide backwards.

The Track Riddle can solved analytically:

With the track length s and the time t the average speed for the first lap is
v1=s/t1

twice that speed would be
2*s / t1

The average time for two laps is
(s+s) / (t1+t2) = 2*s / (t1+t2)

you can write that as
2*v1 = 2*s / t1 =2*s / (t1+t2)

that means
t1=t1+t2

solve that for t2:
t2 = t1-t1 =0

You have no time left to complete lap nr.2
Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

+2 15. kirkelicious commented 7 years ago on video 4 Revolutionary Riddles

1. Difficult: My guess is some goo, or sand. Something with an nonlinear flowing behavior.

2. Ambiguous: depends on the gear ratio. In high gear it goes backwards, but in low gear it might just move forwards. Hard to tell without knowing the numbers and doing the math. These kind of problems often pop up in kinematics.

3. Tricky: To double your average speed, you would have to run twice the distance in the time it took you to run one lap. Unfortunately that time has already passed, so you would have to run the second lap infinitely fast.

4. Easy: The outer rim of the wheel that is below the point of contact with the rail. Or me looking for a toilet.

Those are fun!

#2 It is definetely accelerated by the peoples weight.
Escalators are coupled to the transmission via a driving chain. If that snaps the people would go down because the regular brakes are connected to the transmission. In order to avoid such accidents the tension of the chain is monitored by a broken chain switch that instantaneously releases a fail safe emergency brake if the chain breaks. Either the brake was defective, or some shaft did shear off, something that has to be a really rare occurence. These components are designed with ridiculously high safety factors.

+1 25. kirkelicious commented 7 years ago on video CRS-10 | Falcon 9 First Stage Landing

#1
The structures of rocket stages are extremely lightweight. A decent estimate would be, that the stage only weighs around 5-7% of its original weight when it is jetisoned. (Only the one stage, not even counting payload and the second stage).
The first stage barely leaves the atmosphere. After a short entry burn, the stage is aerodynamically slowed down to terminal velocity and navigated to the landing platform by fins, a process that does not reqire fuel at all. The little fuel that is spent for maneuvering over the landing platform, stabilizing the rocket and the final burn of the landing, only amounts to a tiny fraction of the overall fuel costs (I reccon less than five percent of the total fuel consumption of the rocket). That extra fuel however replaces valuable Payload capacity. Spacex gives the figure of 30% reduction in payload for a stage recovery.
#5
For some ballpark figures about fuel weight in rocketry I recommend this informative yet entertaining read:

However, the reasons for the current extinction period reveal some pretty nasty human traits.
Declaring a species endangered often seals its fate, because it usually initiates a run on the remaining individuals by poachers, collectors, snake oil salesmen and decadent big gain hunters.
The other main reason, of course, is the loss of habitat.

First of all they're dogs and can be trained to behave in any way you like if you put in the effort.
So, i totally agree that the problem with many aggressive specimen is on the other end of the leash, what partly accounts for the statistics.
But to label them as a gentle breed is pretty naive. This line of dogs was purposely bred to fight. The clue is in the name: Pit Bull - a dog bred as a bull fighter that was further optimized to fight in the pit.
Like any dog bred for a purpose it comes with some special and for family dogs often undesirable traits. A beagle will follow any scent trail his nose picks up, a Weimaraner will be hard to call of a Rabbit and guard dogs like a GSD will be hard to train not to bark, when someone is at the door.
I currently train two Staffs, both owned by loving responsible people, and let me tell you: they bring their own set of challenges. They are huge fun, but generally speaking I would not let them play with children. They simply pack too much power.
If you want a gentle dog a goldie might be a better choice.

#5 No arguing about that. Especially not with an antispeciesist like myself. My excoursion into behavioral biology leaves issues like emotional complexity and intelligence completely untouched. I only challenged the idea that these behaviors where acquired by mimicking humans. I spend most of my free time training animals and am in awe of their mental capacities. Learning through observation is a skillset they mostly lack, though, which makes Skinnerian learning mechanisms much more plausible in these instances.
Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

+1 58. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video smart cows and karabau

#1 I doubt cows learn those things by imitation. Don't get me wrong: I am not saying they're stupid, but the ability to learn complex tasks by imitation from another species requires reasoning skills, or a really close social connection like we find in dogs and humans for example. And even dogs are not good at it unless you teach them to.
What you see here is the result of operant conditioning. The organism gets rewarded for an initially random action and learns to increase the frequency of the behavior through positive reinforcement. A thirsty cow that is nervously waiting for some water near a pump is bound to hit the handle sooner or later and gets rewarded for that action by getting some water. No higher mental capacity is needed to learn new behaviors that way. You can even teach crabs to ring a bell by pulling a string to get food by positive reinforcement.
The more complex behaviors are a result of confinement and a deprivation syndrome that lets them resort to meaningless actions like licking random things. Once in a while a cow figures out something new this way. With hundreds of millions of cows confined to inappropriate conditions some will figure out something amazing inevitably.

0 72. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video One Year on Earth – Seen From 1 Million Miles

#6 Well, now you know that earth pretty much is a perfect sphere. The imperfections do not show up any more than the imperfections on a ping pong ball.

You have to consider the scale of things. Correctly scaled earth and moon are like a soccer ball and a tennis ball with a distance of 8 meters between. Now imagine zooming in on that soccer ball from 33 m away. Chances, that you get the tennis ball into the same shot are really small.
If it where a common thing for the moon to pass exactly on the extended earth moon axis (behind earth in layman's terms) we'd have lunar eclipses all the time.

I guess the other stars do not show up because of the exposure settings, but could have been edited out. So what? The sensors of the cameras do probably not even cover a rectangular area, certainly not a 4:3 aspect ratio. They were built for a very special purpose - to observe earth.

I doubt that a 3% change in distance from a light source would change the brightness significantly, but I am perfectly fine with NASA adjusting brightness levels to create an image that is pleasant to look at.

The satellite remains fixed in its position relative to the earth and the sun at the Lagrange point L1, so it is completely irrelevant how fast they are moving. The fact that we move through space at 2 million km/h does not has to be considered by photographers on earth, because their relative motion to their subject is stationary. Same thing there, only the angle and distance remain constant.

Recurring clouds in text form and South Africa rising above the clouds are figments of your imagination.

There seems to be a lot you do not know. I can only encourage you to spend some time learning about these things. It isn't always easy to understand, but when you finally do it is hugely satisfying, because the topic is truly fascinating.

Legalizing or not is an extremely difficult topic. The most cases of rape aren't committed to satisfy an urge for sexual stimulation, but for sadistic reasons and the feeling of dominance. These people would be also abusive to prostitutes in a manner that clearly has to be illegal. Legal prostitution automatically means more girls will consider this damaging career path that usually ends in drug addiction. On the other hand illegality takes them the last hope for protection, but to be fair, just because something is legal it does not mean it isn't controlled by organized crime, like the club business in certain areas for example.
I do not think the law can have much impact here. Society has to realize what those customers really are - sex offenders. The chance you end up with a prostitute who does not have sex with you against her will (for various reasons) are extremely small. We all have to create a climate, where people do not think it is ok to pay their sons a trip to the brothel for their 18th birthday.

Whataboutism is a argumentative fallacy and a pretty cheap reasoning tactic. These dogs are mainly stressed out of their minds. The black one seems to look for guidance at the brown one and his charging behavior looks to me like what is called "displacement behavior" - an activity a dog resorts to if he feels the need to react and does not know what an appropriate behavior would be in a given situation. They are excited for sure, as the wagging tail indicates. The carriage of the ears and the eyebrows are indicators, that they do not intend to attack but rather put on a show to be taken seriously. The officer spots that verry well. It is easy to see these details with enough knowledge of dog behavior from a safe distance. But in the heat of the moment? Hats off!

#13 The bone conduction method would work great with a third person in the loop, but texting or covertly wispering does not seem feasible to me. It would be a great idea for spiritualist scammers, though.

I missed the bit where he looks at the provider (well spotted). That makes it a whole lot easier. "the provider" then clearly signals At&t, which makes sense, because he uses the simplest phrase for the most common provider. If it was something more exotic he would have to ask something along the lines of "NEXT, WOULD you be so kind and TELL me the provider, PLEASE, if I MAY ask?". With such a sentence he could spell out the first 5 letters of the provider.

After I spent some more thought on this I am pretty sure I figured out how he transmits the pulses. When he is in plain side he taps her hand while holding it. Then he uses speech patterns to code the cellphone. With the eye drops he stands still in a place where his feet are hidden from view. That makes me think he has a transmitter in his shoes. There are sets you can buy and hide in your heels. The pulses can be triggered by operating a button with a toe, or a circuit can be closed by tapping the shoes together.

#10 These code systems are fairly extensive and cover most items people carry around. In the odd case they get an exotic item they usually describe it in terms of shape, material, color and move on to the next. They also can literally spell out the word using their codes. They have multiple phrases that correspond with a letter of the alphabet or they use morse code. This method involves a lot of chatting which can get pretty obvious in the long run. For that reason they memorize a huge database of items.
Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

+8 103. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video America's Got Talent 2016 Amelie and Tommy The Clairvoyants Full Clip S11E01

With televised acts it is hard to tell exactly what is going on, because lots of clues are edited out.

It is no coincidence these kind of mentalist acts are done mostly by couples, because they have a complex coding system that needs years to master to perfection and constant every day practice. This is what I think is going on:

They have a code system for typical items people carry with them. This can be a numerical code or the way Tommy phrases the questions. In their case it is both.

With the lipstick the information is transmitted by a numerical code via squeezing of the hand. Two numbers are sent. First an identifier for the Item and then the shade number.

The next act with the cellphone is coded in speach patterns. "Lets start with this." is code for cell phone, "What am I holding?" could be code for credid card for example. You get the picture. "So, the color..." means white, "What color is it?" could mean black.
The provider is the tricky part. My guess is that we either do not see everything due to editing, or that he felt lucky guessing the biggest provider in the states, and had another "out" in case he was wrong (something like "then someone next to you must use AT&T" ). It wouldn't matter if he got it wrong, because he had already established an impressive history of hits.

For acts like the one with the eye drops mentalists often use a device called a "thumper", that can be strapped to your upper leg and transmits morse. #2 could be on to something with the suspiciously chunky swing set as well. The same technique as with the lip stick is used here, and Tommy has a clever way of operating the transmitter (perhaps squeezing it in his underarms).

The basics of such an act are pretty easy to understand and are described in Corinda's Book from 1961, but you really have to appreciate the amount of practice that goes into it to be that smooth!

The matching cubes at the end are achieved by making Teller pick the cube Brundage handled at the beginning (he got lucky, otherwise he would have had to add some other elements to the routine), or by switching Penn's cube at 1:00 (looks suspicious). With an economic growth of 2%, which is a typical figure in successful economies, this is an increase by the factor 16 by then and we are using up ressources beyond sustainability already now.
If economical growth declines again, which it inevitably will, birth rates will go up again and we will have a positive feedback loop. We should really have a plan for that.

It also confirms what i've been saying. We are a long way from clinical trials and no evidence for actual clinical efficacy is available so far. None of the studies the NCI mentions are about the antitumor properties of cannabis oil, but rather of isolated compounds like delta-9-THC or CBD.

About one quarter of all pharmaceuticals are derived from plants, most of them alkaloids. Cannabis contains a variety of different alkaloids, so it makes sense to investigate them thoroughly. There are other plants out there with the same potential, but only because it is weed, this one gets everyone all excited.

I am critical of news like this, because on one hand it potentially gives people, who do not understand the details of drug development, false hope, and on the other hand it nourishes conspiracy theories. I've heard countless time that the Jews are in charge of Big Pharma and have invented chemo to kill off the goi, while they themselves have a natural remedy (insert a miracle cure here) which cures cancer 100% without side effects.

It is important to realize the difference between in vitro and in vivo. Scientists are looking into possible applications of cannabis derived compounds for cancer treatment based on some initial results, but an in vitro result does not mean that we have discovered an effective treatment for cancer. There are plenty of substances that kill off fast replicating cells that have been discarded in the past because they where not suitable for treatments of actual patients. So far I have not seen any evidence that cannabis oil is be any different.

Ok, I admit I got a little obsessed and researched a little bit further.

First thing I noticed when viewing it in slomo is, that he does not really twist the cubes at all. That made me reject my reverse hypothesis.

The current world record for a one handed solve of a RC is 7 seconds. He would have to have done 3 world record breaking solves simultaneously with alternating hands while juggeling - highly improbable.

Then I punched some permutations into a RC solver and it became clear that some consecutive permutations could not have been achieved by a single move.

The truth seems to be less impressive than I initially thought. I usually do not scream CGI whenever I do not understand something, but in this case it feels appropriate. He performs his trick in front of a building of a visual effect company, after all.

I am impressed enough by the fact that he scrambles them while juggling.
But you're right, some people have too much time and learn all sorts of crazy skills that have been previously thought to be impossible.
I tend to go with the least crazy option, and that is he practiced to throw the cubes in an awkward style at the beginning that looks like he is catching them when played in reverse. Seems more likely than the feat described in the title.

If you know anything about dogs you immediately see that this is fearful behavior. Laid back ears, squinting the eyes, licking the nose, wrinkles on the forehead, the way he is carrying his head, the tail tucked away and carrying the weight on the hind legs are all signs that he feels threatened. A truly aggressive dog will look pretty much the opposite, if you dont consider the showing of the teeth. When CM attacks him, he tries to retreat and starts to fight him off when that strategy has no success. When a dog signals that clearly "leave me alone, or I will defend myself" it is a really bad idea to aggressively corner him.

Falsified or flawed studies can cause a lot of harm, but they tend to be exposed, especially if they have big implications. That's when others in the field examine them closely and try to replicate the results. You probably should take any given study with a grain of salt after the initial publication, but as time goes on the self correcting mechanisms of the scientific method usually take care of the bad apples.
The biggest problem is that interest groups keep beating the dead horses like the Wakefield or the Seralini study and use them to instill fear into the scientifically illiterate.

Turns out the transcrips and recordings are publicly available since 1973 and didn't "emerge 4 decades later" (that's when NASA uploaded them to the internet archives) as the show claims. NASA scientists explain the the sounds as interference with the VHF ranging system, which is integrated in the radio system. The sounds are characteristic for modulation effects on an oscillating circuit like you would have in a theremin.
The sounds also sound completely different as you can hear here on the original tapes (beginning at 2:50):

http://history.nasa.gov/ap10fj/audio/a10o-1021010.mp3

Neither the Crew, nor NASA ever showed real interest in the phenomenon.
Apollo 10 Lunar Module Pilot Gene Cernan:
‘I don’t remember that incident exciting me enough to take it seriously. It was probably just radio interference. Had we thought it was something other than that we would have briefed everyone after the flight. We never gave it another thought.’

#1 Don't shoot the messenger. NdGT did not downgrade Pluto, he just communicated the consensus to the public. The guys who played a central roll in Pluto's demotion, Mike Brown and Konstanin Batygin are working hard on finding a new planet outside of the Kuiper Belt, that might be even bigger than Neptune and Uranus. Perhaps that will make up for it? :)

I agree with NdGT, that science should be presented to the public as something fun and exciting, to get more people into it. I also think that the way science is taught in schools has to be fundamentally improved. People have to learn how the scientific method works and not only which results it yielded. Students learn how DNA replicates, or how to calculate the harmonic of a pendulum in science class. What they do not learn is how proper clinical trials are set up, how to read scientific publications and, most importantly, how to discriminate between real and junk science.
People who have these skills can make informed political decisions, can assess the merits of sensational medical news and can protect themselves and their friends and relatives from being ripped off or harmed by pseudoscientific/medical cons.

+1 210. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains Einstein's Gravitational Waves Theory

#5 Besides advancements in engineering, computing, mathematics and measuring precision that we gain from setting up such experiments it is an empirical validation of a fundamental scientific assumption that previously stood on purely theoretical grounds. It tells us something about the scope of application of the theory of GR, which allows us to be more confident in predictions and the interpretation of measured data on a cosmic scale. It also is a working proof of concept for the upcoming eLISA project, which will be essentially a telescope that receives gravitational information.
Up to now our probing of the distant universe was relying purely on measurements in the electromagnetic spectrum. From now on we have an additional source of information at our disposal. The knowledge we can gain by analyzing both kinds of signals synergistically is far greater than the sum of its components.
Besides, who knows what such a fundamental breakthrough will bring us in the future? When Stein and Gerlach first measured the spin of a particle in 1922 they had no idea that this would revolutionize medical diagnostics 50 years later, when MRI was invented.

#22 The difference between our way of thinking is, that I try to have an open mind and base my ever changing opinion on the growing body of evidence. People in general are really poor in judging cause and effect relations. Just because you didn't observe effects in your private life does not say anything about risks.
You really shouldn't trust your own experience, when countless rigorous studies come to different conclusions. As an individual you really have too many cognitive biases like your confirmation bias, frequency illusion... that's just how the human brain works.
I personally know many smokers. None of them has died of lung cancer so far. Does that mean the risks of smoking are made up by scientists?
I know pot smokers who do well and are very creative and I know those who struggle with life and are lethargic but in none of these cases am I qualified to judge the effect weed has on their lives. Such knowledge can only be gained by studying carefully collected data.

That data shows, that some compounds in weed are highly effective in treating certain conditions, whereas others have negative effects. It also shows that smoking it regularly can be devastating to your lungs, that the risk of getting a stroke increases by a factor of 4 in young adults while high, that regular consumption permanently changes the brain in adolescents...

If it makes you enjoy life more and you personally don't feel that you are inhibited by your habit and are willing to take the health risks, then go for it. But promoting the idea, that it is a completely harmless, side effects free wonder cure just does not reflect reality.

+2 216. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video The best instant relief for tremors my epileptic wife has ever found

#20 personal anecdotes are often very compelling to the scientific layman, but they are completely invalid if you want to establish medical knowledge.

In clinical and epidemiological studies great care is taken to observe a representative sample of test subjects and eliminate every possible bias. Something I cannot say about your cute story.

What about all the positive effects? Are they also all from personal experience, or do you suddenly trust the science, when it reflects your ideology?
Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

+1 217. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video The best instant relief for tremors my epileptic wife has ever found

#18 That's not how research at universities works. Published results are double checked in the peer review process by scientists with all kind of funding backgrounds. You do not become a respected scientist without the ethos to value accuracy and objectivity. Just because you feel that weed is a nice thing, you cannot simply dismiss conflicting evidence on the basis of a conspiracy theory. That's incredibly intellectually dishonest.

Even though I don't like the paternalistic approach of #15 of banning things the authorities deem bad for you, I feel the need to back him up with some facts, so you can make informed decisions what you want to consume an what not.

#2 The inner layer of an airplaine window does not bear any loads and serves no structural purposes. It is more an interior design feature, dust cover and provides some thermal insulation. Without the little hole on the bottom it would bulge inwards, or even pop out at altitude, what would be more than alarming for passengers.
Planes do not implode, if anything they would explode. But the pressure difference is not big enough to create an explosion. The problem is the formation of cracks in high-stress areas, which will at one point cause the plane to rip apart once a crack is long enough. If such a crack allows the air with wind speeds of 900 km/h - 4 times the speed of a cat. 5 hurricane - to attack, it simply rips of pieces and once the shape of the hull is damaged it becomes unstable and the wind can give it the rest.

+8 233. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video A Simple Mind Trick Will Help You Think More Rationally

My advice for critical thinking: When you research, try to falsify your own convictions and ideas, not confirm them. If an idea like "is there a god" is unfalsifyable, then there is no right or wrong answer to it and you have to acknowledge that it is not a matter of rational thinking. If you try and fail to falsify an idea like "is the belief in the supernatural a positive force in society", that in principal is falsifyable, you then have a firm ground for your convictions. Finding evidence for something you already agree with is easy and your confirmation bias can easily cloud your mind. Examining the conflicting evidence can lead to painful cognitive dissonance. That's why it is so hard to be rational/critical.

#24 I've read it several times. And yes, I agree that the NT is a step forward and promotes less hatred than the OT or the Quran and therefore is a better update of the ancient texts. Your explanation in kiddies words does not really hold water. Plenty of nasty content of the OT remains untouched and nearly all religious christians do draw meaning from the OT. They mainly pick and choose the stuff that does not contradict the values of the society they live in, normal Muslims do the same. Many christians prove that it is possible to interpret the OT literally, though.
For that reason i promote caution of generalizing too much. Evil people can justify their deeds with all religions, as well as good people can be motivated by every scripture.
By the way, when is stew ready?

#19 ever read through the bible? It also promotes genocide of nonbelieving tribes and other unspeakable horrible crimes. True, Islam is not a religion of peace, but it is in itself not more a religion of hate than other monotheistic religions. The problem is, that some insane people interpret the quran literally, something the other religions have left behind themselves since the enlightenment. The vast majority of Muslims wants to live peacefully. In many Muslim majority countries women have equal rights. The people that are killed by religious fanatics are mainly members of the Muslim majority that has outgrown the early medieval belief system, and who are terrorized by the fanatic fringe of Islam.

The problem with Islam is that the number of Westborough-Baptist-Church, Anders-Breivik-equivalent Nutjobs is currently staggeringly higher than in other religions. But you cannot generalize that to more than a billion people.

#2 I admit the borders between terrorism and guerrilla warfare are a bit blurry. You could say that it is a terrorist act, when its main objective is to instill fear as a way to further your political/religious motives. The way the acts of violence counted in this video are classified as terror may be slightly biased from a western point of view, I give you that. But you cannot compare strategical drone strikes with civilian casualties to indiscriminate massacres with the sole objective to cause pain and misery. Therefore "Terrorist" and "Enemy" are not terms that are interchangeable and purely a matter of perspective.

It is only logical that you get love, respect and positive things in return if you treat others well. I would rather do something nice for a likable guy than for a selfish prick. No need to be all metaphysical about it.
I don't buy that you sincerely believe that a person dying in agony from some disease is to blame for his misery because bad things come to bad people.
If you simply mean that everybody is responsible for repercussions resulting from their behavior, there is no arguing about that. Only the use of the word Karma is a bit misleading without additional explanation.
My point is that the concept of Karma is terribly romanticized in the new-age movement and the more sinister implications are often ignored.

#7 Karma is indeed a wicked concept. Western people tend to interpret it as "good things come to those who do good deeds.", but that is only half the story. The concept originally means "You get what you deserve". If you're suffering it is your own fault, because you are essentially a bad person. This way of thinking helped to cement the Hindu caste system, where you have zero social mobility, because you are born in a caste according to your behavior in the previous life. This is why the lowest social class "the untouchables" have to deal with a lot of hatred which makes their lives even more miserable.

#3 Apart from some man-hating feminist whackos, who admittedly get much more attention than they deserve and thereby influence the public perception negatively, modern feminism is an emancipatory movement that strives to eliminate structural disadvantades for all sexes. The umbrella term feminism has a historical background, because it was created in a time not long ago, where women weren't even allowed to vote.

From a feminist point of view it is perfectly ok to acknoledge, that women tend to express their emotions more openly like crying in front of others. They also have no problem if you acknoledge their beauty or call them sexy in a non threatening way.
However if you refer to them with the term pussy, which basicly reduces them to their reproductive organ, you should't be surprised that they call you sexist or chauvinistic.

#30 oops you're right about CATO, my bad. Didn't bother to look it up and remembered wrongly. It is founded by Koch Industries, who also have a lot to lose if political measures against global warming come into action.

The problem with science from lobbies and think tanks is, that they generally do not do real own research. Their main job is to filter the existing science done by transnational organisations, put a spin on it and present it in a way that fits their objectives. What results do you expect from a group that declared its goals - free economy, less government,.. - in advance.

Real science on the other hand has no desired conclusions. Its goal is to examine the evidence and constantly update the theory (check #18 for the definition of a scientific theory) to make it best fit all available data. Scientists working on government grants are not in for the money. If they are good at what they do they could make much more elsewhere. They do it for the love of science and are willing to change their minds if new evidence conflicts with previous concepts they believed, because that's what scientific progress is about. Few of them would waste their time trying to confirm a theory they know doesn't hold water.

Your link simply is an opinion piece. A source in a scientific debate should look more like this:

#25 Most oft the people you list are affiliated with CATO, Heartland, Lavoisier... - organisations funded by the fossil fuel industry that have clear agendas. This alone does not dismiss their research (if they did any) but the conflict of interest is worth mentioning none the less. Less than half of these people are real climate scientists with much experience in the field, and the combined record of substantial publications on climate in peer reviewed scientific journals is not impressive, to say the least. I suppose those are the best you can come up with?
I will not reply with hundreds of names of climatologists, who agree on the scientific consensus. That would be silly...

Solar activity sure is a factor that influences earths climate. That does not mean CO2 concentration does't. In fact solar irradiation is declining since the sixties, whereas the climate is constantly getting warmer.

But then again i am a scientist but no expert on climate. So it would be better to just read the meta-studies published by real experts that passed review by other experts, than cherry picking facts that prove our points.

+2 296. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video US Town Rejects Solar Panels Fearing They 'Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun'

#21 Climate change as a political battleground is pretty much an U.S. american phenomenon. In the rest of the world there might be much political debate on how to react but not if the science is real.
Liberal representation of science and the alarmist rhetoric is horrible, no doubt. That is why you don't consult politicians if you want to learn about science. That's what scientific experts are for.
The american right does not want to give the government reasons to intervene in our lives and habits. But just because you don't like the implications, you cannot simply dismiss reality.
Addressing your point of many scientists that disagree: The appeal to authority is a very weak argument, especially if the people you refer to are a fringe group, who - generally speaking - didn't contribute anything to the science. I really wonder why you as a layman put your trust in these few people while dismissing the scientific consensus of people who actually know exactly what they are talking about.

I suppose there is no point arguing with you. Once someones mind is made up and he emotionally invested a lot in a topic, it is hard to change his mind. Trying to convince you is as futile as arguing with a young earth creationist.
Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

+2 297. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video US Town Rejects Solar Panels Fearing They 'Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun'

#19 you're beating a dead horse here. The "hide the decline"-quote was taken completely out of context. See, if the global temperature falls for a few consecutive years, that does not mean that the climate is getting colder. Surface air temperature is not the only indicator for heat trapped in a system. Add natural cycles and statistical variance and it might appear from a limited data set that a climate is cooling. Climate describes the temperature trends over decades, not years. It is perfectly acceptable to account for that by using statistical algorithms. If two colleagues exchange ideas, how to best represent the data and use wording that isn't meant for release to the public, you hardly have a scandal. In this case the decline wasn't even in temperature but in tree ring size in high latitudes since the sixties.
Even if individual scientists are intellectual dishonest enough to tweak pieces of data to be able to publish results (which in this case didn't even happen), that does not discredit climate science anymore than the field of, say, epidemiology, where these things did happen in the past.
I wonder why you take such incidents seriously enough to dismiss a whole scientific field, and on the other hand swallow the grossly distorted representation of think tanks that are financed by the fossil fuel industry hook line and sinker.
We can argue over the appropriate measures and the expected magnitude and socio-economic impact of climate change. But believing in a conspiracy of "Big Climate" based on information you get fed by Big Oil borders on insanity...

Not that the toxicity of CO2 has anything to do with the issue, but it is not all that black and white:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16499405

edit: your car puts out large amounts of CO2 (15%) and very small amounts of CO(0.2%). Big difference ;)
Picture of kirkelicious44 achievements

-1 298. kirkelicious commented 8 years ago on video US Town Rejects Solar Panels Fearing They 'Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun'

Sorry, #17 i really emphathize with your stance on the issue, but your use of the word theory is not the way it is used in science. A scientific THEORY is a model that describes how something works and allows to make accurate predictions. A HYPOTHESIS is something that requires more evidence to be confirmed and when it is, it becomes a THEORY. The more evidence gets gathered the stronger a THEORY gets. When the body of evidence from multiple scientific disciplines all converge to support a THEORY (like the heliocentric model) it becomes so strong that parts of it can be considered FACTS. The THEORY of evolution for example has a lot of holes and many mechanisms are unknown or showed to work completely different than previously established. Its core, however - the origin of new species by natural selection - can be considered to be a fact since the 18th century. and then there is string theory ;)
The terminology is often misused deliberatetely to discredit scientific reality.

In climate-theory there are still many open questions and a tiny minority of experts disagrees on the anthropogenic impact on the climate. Arguably these experts are politically biased and the dissense is grossly exagerated by the right wing media, that thinks there is a huge conspiracy of climate-scientists that only want grant money. These conspiracy theorists, however ignore the fact that scientists with the credentials to publish in respected scientific jurnals like "nature" could earn a lot more money in the private sector and get filthy rich if they sold out to the fossil fuel industry...

The evidence for anthropogenic impact on climate change is pretty compelling and if I had to choose between the scientific concensus and the rants of a talk radio host, I would bet my money on the first.

Is the world really such a bad place, or are we humans simply morbidly fascinated with destruction, mayhem and suffering, and therefore the media and the consumers attention focus on that aspects of life, which in return shapes our views? From personal experience i get the impression, that people generally want to help each other (and other species) out and if they don't it is often due to fear and not indifference. That fear can be a result of social pressure as well as real physical danger.
But then again I have been in several situations where people where threatened/attacked/mugged in public and i was the only one to intervene (usually other people did call the cops, though). Perhaps I am generalizing...

If we want to create an AI that shares our morals, we would have to program them. An impossible task, I might say, for we do not know the normal human moral response to every possible scenario. Our ethics have to be constantly redefined to keep up with technological, political, ... development.

We humans are hardwired to detect patterns in everything! This has been extremely beneficial because it allows us to establish cause and effect in our lives. For example: "If i water my crops regularly, i will have food for the winter." At the same time we are prone to false positives like "If i pray to the goddess Demeter, my crops will grow."
The only method that allows us to determine if a pattern is actually there and if there is an underlying causality, is the scientific method.
Science has shown that graphology, astrology, iridology ... aren't real, yet we cling to such irrational beliefs to the point, that it is still used for criminal profiling by some police forces.

#4 Authority certainly comes into play, but i wouldn't say he misses the point, as the analogy of the caring mother covers that briefly. The absolution of personal responsibility does help a lot to deal with ailments, but placebos have been shown to work even though the recipient knows it is only a sugar-pill.
On the flip side your argument demonstrates how irresponsible it is to spread fear, distrust and uncertainties about well established medical procedures, because the nocebo-effect can compromise the efficacy of an intervention as well.
A mix of both worlds would be ideal: A caring, charismatic health professional you could have a trusting relationship with, that also delivers treatments that meet the standards of up-to-date medical science. Sadly, most specialists are nerds and their time is rare...

Now that's the stuff i visit SNOTR for!

The placebo effect is a fascinating phenomenon, but it is very often falsely credited for the popularity of nonsensical alternative medical practices, or at least its contribution is overestimated. The subjective benefits of sham-treatments are much better explained by "regression to the mean" (symptoms often fluctuate in intensity and you're most likely to search for help, when you have a bad episode), and confirmation bias or selective perception (you tend to remember facts that support your world view - e.g. "alternative medicine is more effective than conventional medicine" - and forget all the incidents that contradict it).

The fact that her father was a POW even granted her family the "privilege" to go to the camp Bergen-Belsen, where prisoners were held for exchange-deals, and not to an extermination-camp. The family was able to maintain contact by mail most of the time and was reunited after the war ended.

The most insane fact was that he wanted it painted in pearl colour to match his favourite car. Since no such color exists for aircraft and car paint does not survive the expansion and contraction of the fuselage very well, he bought painting crews and an enormous paintshop at every airport he visits regularly.
Another crazy fact is that it is en vogue amongst sheiks to have crome coloured air inlets for the engines on their private airliners. As they land and take off in sandy environments they get all dull and have to be replaced everytime the aircraft is serviced between flights. So they have a whole industrial complex in Hamburg that exclusively restores crome engine bodies.

Although the muzzles are funny, I think it is a really bad idea to make a dog with behavioral issues look threatening. Other dogs might not get the joke and will attack in defense.

#10 Herbal remedies are not side effects free. Due to softer regulations, they are merely less studied than conventional medicine, that in many cases is an purified form of the active ingredients you find in varying quantities in herbs. So the side effects are not identified in clinical trials. As a rule of thumb one could say, the more potent a cure, the more side effects it has. "Natural equals better" is a fallacy that snakeoil salesmen eagerly exploit.

#9 just a healthy level of curiosity. Interestingly, a words phonetics seems to be what makes it inappropriate and not the underlying meaning. For example s**t, p*ss, f**k ... are words many agree cant be mentioned, even though they are just lower-class words for everyday's activities. But saying "felching" or "rusty trombone" is usually ok. :x (Am i making things worse?)

0 504. kirkelicious commented 9 years ago on video Will Happer, Princeton's Galileo

Mr. Happner deliberately confuses weather with climate ( #1 as well). The minimum period that can be climatically interpreted is 30 years. So even if the global temperature would have sunk in the last 20 consecutive years it wouldn't mean much. I dare to assert that his cost-risk-assessment is purely speculative. Sure, a warmer planet with more Co2 in the atmosphere would be beneficial to plant life. The critical point is the pace of the climate shift. Will the ecosystems be able to adapt fast enough (or collapse temporarily) and if so, will the following large-scale migrations poise a threat to peace?

In order to make the right political decisions we should pay close attention to the constantly refined model climate-scientists are developing and not dismiss them as a "religious cult".

0 529. kirkelicious commented 9 years ago on video Auschwitz: Drone video of Nazi concentration camp

#15 I am fully aware of the dilemma. All holocaust denial is driven by antisemitism. I just dont think threatening a single idea with prosecution, while allowing people to spread misinformation about other topics and minorities will make much of a difference, other than reinforcing the forbidden belief. You could threaten all people who circulate potential dangerous false facts about race, gender, nationalities, sexuality, medicine, technology, religion... with jail-time or you have to make every thought open for discussion and hope that an educated society can deal with it.

A law, that exclusively protects the Jewish people in this way is a bit anachronistic, given the fact that if something similar to what you describe where to happen today in Germany, it would probably be directed against the German Muslims.

We will yet have to see if an unrestricted exchange of (mis)information will work especially in the age of social media, but i would be willing to give it a try.

+7 619. kirkelicious commented 10 years ago on video Amazing Discovery With Magnets

Explanation: The magnetic force is proportional to 1/distance. If you have a strong magnet at a greater distance and a nearer but weaker oposite one, there is a distance where both forces cancel out. Another factor that enhances the effect, is that the directions of the force-vectors of the outer ring change with decreasing distance (they kinda split up in opposite directions), further weakening the combined pulling force. Simple physics/mechanics ;).

#5 who do you think the portrayed tribe goes to war against? Its just the scale that is different because of the lack of technology.

On an other note: Isnt Euthanasia supposed to be an act of compassion? All i can see this tribe doing, is infanticide motivated by selfish or supersticious reasons. It barely even fits the perverted definition the Nazis used to justify theyr crimes against the handicaped.

Just to clarify for non-dogpeople: The laying back of the ears is a calming-signal that dogs use to comunicate distress or submission, in order to deescalate a situation. This dog basicly expresses his worry of the noise. I like the throttle-theory though.

The dogs bodylanguage actually is showing defensive behaviour, not agression. That does not mean that it would not bite you if you'd come too close. It is however perfectly clear to everybody, that the dog does not want anyone close. Ergo, not dangerous if you dont push him too far.

I think the demonisation of the plant is completely over the top, as is its glorification. Lets face it: THC abuse can trigger a psychosis, as i have witnessed myself in several cases, including one suicide.(#6)
However, everybody should be able to choose for himself if he is willing to take that risk, not the government.
