@ #5 Dog farming is wrong because it's gaining monetary profit at the expense of other animals (effective in all types of farming), who directly suffer as a result. Dogs, like cats, are not necessarily pack animals and as separating a child from its mother is a tragedy, it's not so bad for domestic dogs and cats. This is so because the mother-care period doesn't last very long for these animals anyway, plus most pets are kept as "children" anyway, so their caretakers are just being replaced, in a sense..

The real moral here is that the stray dog/cat problem is growing ever larger and it is a direct result (in part) of puppy farming - the bigger the circulation of a certain good (in this case, the animals), the bigger the "leftover."

Why would anyone buy a dog or a cat for money in a pet shop if across the street, the kennel is bursting at the seems of dogs and cats who actually need a home?

Well in my opinion (and i happen to share it with my father who is a proffessional zoologist, biosemioticist, ethologist etc.) the most explainable theory as to how these elephants can paint is that Elephants have extremely good memory-power. And being rather well-tameable (in lack of a better word) their animal raisers have used a certain technique where they take a blunt object and carve a well visible contour (of the picture being drawn) onto it. The elephant is then shown how to and instructed to follow that certain contour with a paintbrush. Having great memories the Elephants quickly memorize the contour - and voila, magic trunklings

#12 I do agree with you in the sense that we should first reform our ways, our economy, political and environmental institutions on Earth, to create some kind of a role-model for space-colonization - in other words we shouldn't look toward space and neglect the state of affairs on Earth.

However, I also believe that space-colonization would be a logical next step for a civilization such as ours.. we should just start from the inside - first make an actual Human Civilization and not take our childish quarrels and problems with us into space. Granted it is very difficult to convey these kinds of matters in a totally un-biased way, especially if the task is to educate the unspecialised and largely unknowing masses about something as controversial as fracking. I believe neither panic nor blind faith in the system are right stances in this case and the truth resides somewhere in the middle. What this whole thing does teach us for certain though, is that in our capitalist system, money rules and this is especially so for anything concerning fossil fuels - something which has been regarded as the ultimate goal in modern economy, with the power to even silently override government and state policy in the name of profit.

This is another one of these examples, where we are not faced with what's really wrong with the system, but are rather shown how a symptom of a system in crisis is wreaking havoc. I am quite sure fracking in residential areas should be banned absolutely for it is a highly industrial activity and big industry doesn't belong in peoples backyard. Our true goals shouldn't be in trying to get even more fossil fuels to be put to use in highly unoptimized ways but to limit fossil fuel use wherever possible and put more effort in developing safer and more sustainable forms of energy.

But yeah, compared to the tarsands this is small fish, as crazy as that might sound. We need industrial zones in a country made out of nature reserves, not the other way around.
