#8 - while we don't have malaria in Europe (well, very marginally in E. Europe), we do have the spread of the Asian tiger mosquito to consider. This lovely little insect transmits West Nile fever, dengue fever, Chikungunya disease and yellow fever, among other diseases. It's reached the South of France already and is adapting to the cooler European climate. And it's spreading.... :O

Question: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who watches the watchmen?) Answer: We the people! I love it!

We surely need "weapons" in the battle to retain our rights against the accumulation of power by a small minority. Elections mean less and less nowadays, because essentially the same elite is always in charge. The politicians we elect are not there to do our bidding, but theirs.

I'm not sure I made my point very well in comment #2. Michael Jackson was one of the people who dominated the entertainment industry when he was alive, and he certainly wasn't a talentless idiot. "Ukelele James" didn't write "Billie Jean", Michael Jackson did. He plays it well, but he is never going to be able to fill a stadium with that performance in the way that MJ did.

+6 23. sartre commented 11 years ago on video Fake injury FAIL

Anyone who can laugh at another human being getting seriously injured has already lost a part of their humanity.

Maybe he did intend to claim insurance for an accident that never happened. If so he was incredibly incompetent - he didn't try to collide with a vehicle as some others have done. But even if he did intend to defraud, there are courts to deal with that. And even then, the reasons WHY would still be a mystery to anyone watching this video. What if he was utterly destitute and this was the only idea he could come up with to get some money? None of us knows, that's why courts are a better place to decide culpability and punishment. Vigilante justice is almost always unjust.

Sorry to go on about this. I'm shocked to see another human being injured like that, and disappointed to see cowardly website surfers enjoying it.

I'll add that the same benefit of the doubt extends to the motorist. It's not apparent that he intentionally ran over the guy. My comments are directed at people who have replied to this thread.

#15 You don't know why he lay down. He could be drunk, about to faint, or having a heart attack. He could be mentally incompetent. He could be suicidal.

In NO situation would it be right to drive over him. None whatsoever.

Legalise drugs. Reclassify drugs rationally based on empirical data. Put Class A drugs under government supervision so that harder drug users come within the system and get access to medical and psychological care. Eliminate the criminality and use the money saved on police work to build better inner city communities and provide more outlets for young people's energies.

+3 92. sartre commented 11 years ago on video Does The Universe Have A Purpose?

#15 There are two types of knowledge, only one of which is considered valid by science. Empirical knowledge can be shared but experience cannot. Some "religious" people fail to understand this latter point and try to prove God's existence when in fact no proof is capable of being transmitted.

Speaking as an ex-atheist, who rejected religion for probably many of the same reasons as you, my understanding was changed by Aldous Huxley's book "The Perennial Philosophy". He compared the sayings of the mystics of the great world religions and showed that they were talking about the same reality, common to all paths. The terminology, rituals etc of the different religions are means to the same end, which is direct knowledge of Reality. The different manifestations of religion relate to the needs of the time, people and place that they were revealed.

"All religions, as theologians - and their opponents - understand the word, is something other than what it is assumed to be.

Religion is a vehicle. Its expression, rituals, moral and other teachings are designed to cause certain elevating effects, at a certain time, upon certain communities.

Because of the difficulty of maintaining the science of man, religion was instituted as a means of approaching truth. The means always became, for the shallow, the end, and the vehicle became the idol.

Only the man of wisdom, not the man of faith or intellect, can cause the vehicle to move again."

#9 I agree with you that all drugs should be legalised. But as for Ian Anderson, just read the comment on that video by GTX1123:

"Ian Anderson never touched drugs - not once nor even got drunk. This is a well known fact. Unlike the Ed Sullivan show, there were certain shows back then where you were not allowed to play live. This was probably because the directors and producers were terrified of one disasterous performance which could cause a big loss in their ratings. OK, yeah whatever - he could have got a little closer to the mic - but this was typical of Ian's always entertaining, animated bawdy antics on stage. "

Also, this interview with him: http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/ian_anderson_of_jethro_tull/

"I mean, out of all the bands, and all the people I’ve known, really, I’m probably the only person I know for sure never did what we popularly called “drugs” during all of that period. It was just something everybody did. And I didn’t really enjoy being around people who were doing drugs, so I just took myself often to read a book somewhere, and waited for it all to kind of evaporate from the rock and roll lifestyle."

My own experience, of 15 years' daily smoking, is that I had some amazing times that wouldn't have been possible without it. But in the end I regretted the amount of my time that it used up.

+4 172. sartre commented 11 years ago on video Rethinking thinking.

#4 I can't speak for myself but I do know that some people are on monthly quotas with their ISPs, it's very common in Australia and New Zealand for example. So a video that's 126MB is a significant chunk of someone's quota, especially if there is no good reason why it's so large. This video is a simple animation, it could have been recoded to be much smaller with no loss of information or entertainment value.

On to the video itself: it's good to evaluate your own thinking every so often but we wouldn't get much done if we had to constantly examine our thought processes. In the example he gave, 99.99% of the time someone takes your parking space they have no valid reason and our reactions are probably correct.

+2 173. sartre commented 11 years ago on video Michio Kaku: How to travel to other stars, so unimaginably far away.

#9 The furthest we have sent anything away from Earth is the Voyager 1 space probe. It has been travelling for a little over 35 years and has managed to go 18,300,000,000 kilometres at a current speed of 17.26 km/sec. At that rate it will take another 57,615 years to reach the expected distance of the nearest star to Earth (Ross 248, which in about 36,000 years' time should be about 3 light years away from us).

The idea of sending a probe to check out a planet and report back is just not realistic.

I'm with #8 on this: nanobots do not achieve any objective of spreading human life through the cosmos. We need better ideas and novel technology.

One thing is sure: the planet will eventually run out of luck and be hit by something from space. It makes sense to, at the very least, have inhabited another planet in our own solar system to increase our survival chances.

+3 175. sartre commented 11 years ago on video Is Mars Red Hot?

I'm well aware of that #7. Clouds of sulphuric acid, extreme atmospheric pressure: it's not a welcoming environment.

But it still has more potential than Mars as a possible place to live. There are creatures on Earth that can survive the kind of extreme conditions seen on Venus. We have bacteria and even some multicellular creatures whose chemistry runs on sulphur and appear not to require oxygen. They can be found around deep sea volcanic vents, operating at temperatures and pressures that would kill most other creatures.

I reckon we have, or will soon have, the technology to genetically modify some of those to not only survive in Venus, but to use them to transform the Venusian atmosphere into something resembling Earth's. The atmosphere is the key to making the planet habitable: if we can reduce the greenhouse effect and manufacture oxygen then we can eventually introduce other, similarly genetically-modified, organisms to further prepare the planet for life.

It's not going to be easy, and it's not going to be quick but I think it's our best way forward if we want to leave this planet and ensure our long term survival.
Picture of sartre32 achievements

+3 176. sartre commented 11 years ago on video Is Mars Red Hot?

I think Mars is not an option for future human colonisation. Any base we might establish there would be very difficult to sustain.

Maybe a better option would be to find a way to terraform Venus, which has a denser atmosphere than Mars and Earth - a toxic atmosphere, but an atmosphere nevertheless. This might be achievable over centuries if we could find a way of sending genetically modified organisms into the Venusian atmosphere to convert the carbon dioxide there to oxygen and carbon. We already have some organisms on Earth that can survive at very high temperatures and pressures, so those could be candidates for some DNA insertions to effect the necessary functions.

With the right mixture of organisms we might be able to transform the entire planet into somewhere survivable. Venus is much closer to Earth in terms of size, and therefore surface gravity, than Mars. Our chances of finding, let alone reaching, a planet that is more suitable for Earth-based life forms anytime soon are close to zero so it's got to be worth a shot. At some stage we are going to have to start journeying to other planets to escape our dying star, so Venus would be a good candidate for us to learn some terraforming skills.

The State reserves the exclusive right to use coercive force to enforce the law. That's reasonable provided that the State behaves justly.

In the case of Spain and the other countries affected by the European Banking debt crisis, the State is NOT acting justly. It still expects private citizens to repay their own debts, whilst bailing out the banks and absolving them from THEIR debts. And it expects the same indebted citizens to repay the bailout money given to the banks! Meanwhile bankers are now dictating to governments how they should legislate, which services they should cut and which new laws and taxation systems they should enact. Bankers are still paying themselves bonuses for good performance. The nerve of it is breathtaking.

We, the citizens, know we are being rooked and we are starting to demonstrate. So we should, it is our right. And the State will try every dirty tactic in the book to thwart those demonstrations, including deliberately provoking violence via over-aggressive riot police and planting agents provocateurs in the crowd to get the ordinary demonstrators a bad name.

Luckily people are aware of some of the tactics likely to be employed. Filming and YouTubing is a powerful counter-weapon in the battle between justice and tyranny.

I try to make up my own mind about things, Dan5883. I bear in mind, when accessing media sources, that they are ALL biased in one way or another.

It's easy to pass judgement on others less fortunate than ourselves and to pat ourselves on the back for what, in many cases, is merely a case of being in the right place at the right time. Yes, there are people who have lost all ambition to work and who have decided to live on government handouts, but my understanding is that welfare is not very generous in the US compared to here in Europe. In normal circumstances people prefer to work and earn their living here just as much as Americans do. The safety net of the state is reassuring but it doesn't make for a fulfilling life and people know this.

As far as your opinion of socialism goes, I can only say that the red meat, winner-takes-all society that the US appears to this outsider to be, does not appeal much to me. It's pretty much proven that societies with smaller gaps between rich and poor are safer and happier places to live in. I don't think a society where 95% of the people scrabble around for 37% of the pie is a healthy one.

As to the US bailing Europe out: I cannot see how it is possible. We are both in QE ["Quantitive Easing"] Phase 3 now - i.e. we are printing money a third time around. Each time we are told that this is a temporary measure and that the banking system will soon be on its feet, and thereafter the economy. I'll believe it when I see it. I recommend the golemxiv.co.uk site I linked to earlier to anyone trying to understand the present economic crisis.

I uprated your comment by the way: you're quite right that this discussion about US vs European perspectives on the economy has nothing to do with the video! But hey, it's interesting to exchange ideas isn't it? :)

+4 233. sartre commented 12 years ago on video Teacher Ends Fight Like a Boss

Well #9, from the perspective of a European looking in on American society, it appears terminally broken. The top 5% of Americans own 63.5% of the country's wealth. The bottom 80% of Americans own just 12% of the wealth. See http://www.golemxiv.co.uk/2012/10/why-are-we-bailing-out-the-banks-part-one-the-simple-answer/ for the source of the figures. Most Americans are unaware of this disparity between the rich and poor.

That sort of inequality has to have an effect. The gulf between the aspirational American Dream and the reality that the vast majority of people will live their lives as modern-day serfs must find an outlet in violence or internalised aggression (drug-taking, alcoholism, eating disorders etc).

+12 235. sartre commented 12 years ago on video 100-Year-Old Man Shares the Secret to Happiness

When a centenarian is interviewed and asked how they managed to reach such a ripe old age, they usually assume that their longevity is down to something they have done.

But there's a logical fallacy involved here called "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" which means if someone does something (X) and then something happens afterwards (Y) then X must have caused Y.

In the case of old people, one will say that they reached 100 by drinking a small glass of wine a day. Another will claim that they never drank or smoked and that's the reason they lived to 100. One will credit their vegetarianism, another their love of a juicy steak. Given that the advice is often contradictory there doesn't seem to be any infallible "method" of prolonging your life. And although it *might* be possible, I think Coca-Cola is best avoided irrespective of this guy's story.

Oh, and the wannabe parkour guys. Hopefully someone out there may watch the video and reconsider the wisdom of attempting the kind of stunts trained professionals would shy away from. Or at the very least attempt them wearing a helmet, knee and elbow protectors, and a jockstrap.

I DON'T laugh at road accidents or where an innocent bystander gets thumped by a stray rally car, bicycle or by an idiot attempting an unwise stunt.

Sure, the guy is a pain in the neck, and most probably wrong in affirming his right to film anywhere - apparently he needed permission, which he didn't have. But to commit violence on him for this is extreme, unjust and an overreaction.

He was never going to be able to enter that room with his camera, he didn't have a weapon, he wasn't threatening to assault anyone. My understanding is that the taser was only to be used to prevent or stop violent behaviour, not to give a functionary a chance to play God. There were other, older, ways of dealing with the situation that would have worked equally well.

I'm saddened, but not surprised, to see so many people getting off on watching one human being injure another.

#23 even if true that this Zahir Muhsein *was* somehow representing official PLO policy (and there are grounds to believe that he wasn't since he was in conflict with other PLO factions according to Wiki) it's an irrelevant point in any case. It's a fact that the village was destroyed and the land was taken from its original owners (unless you subscribe to the notion that the land has always belonged to the Jewish tribes and that anyone else on that land is somehow squatting). It's also a fact that Intel built its plant on that land. I'll leave it there since this has been a long digression from the video.

Back on topic somewhat...

The original Palestinian villages would still be there, occupied by their rightful owners, in accordance with international law and guarantees given by Israel (and immediately broken) that those people would be "fully secure in their persons, abodes, property and personal effects".

Given that those villages were razed to the ground and their inhabitants driven out, I doubt very much that Intel is providing much employment to Palestinians there.

I couldn't watch to the end. I like boxing, the technical skill and so forth, and a knockout is a dramatic moment in a match, but a video composed of nothing but KOs is fairly sickening.

Wow - what an intricate process to make a vinyl record. It's closer to traditional craftmanship than mass production.

I can see why the record companies wanted to make CDs: it saves them a lot of money. Shame when they brought in the CD they charged the same price as for vinyl. But then they shot themselves in the foot: by changing an analog technology to digital they ushered in the mp3 era and now they're moaning that it's too easy to copy and distribute music. Serves them right for being so greedy imo.

Be careful here folks. I had a PC years ago which was badly designed. If you unplugged it and held the plug you got a shock from the capacitors. Even though they were the less powerful types mentioned in this video, they were big enough to deliver a vicious shock. These ultracapacitors can kill.

One reason for keeping the cables above ground - in Japan at least - is that it's much easier to fix after an earthquake.

He's great - I lived in the same French city as him for 8 years. Check out his videos on YT - the elevator sequence always cracks me up. And he's a pretty good footballer too.

And don't golfers suffer from a serious lack of humour?

Karin Lipp-Mayer:

"What's happened in Japan is almost lucky".

I hope that was a bad translation of what she said in German. One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded, causing 15,000+ deaths and one of the world's largest nuclear accidents is hardly "lucky". :(

Anyone care to enlighten me? Why is the cosmic background radiation, travelling at the speed of light, only arriving here now? Sorry if I'm not explaining this well, but it seems to me that if I shine a flashlight, then travel at less than the speed of light in the direction in which I point the flashlight I will never see the light from it since it will outrun me. Hasn't the light from the Big Bang done the same with respect to our solar system?

Very cool. From the home page of Bright Bricks they say that this is "a working model of a Rolls Royce aircraft engine". I don't know what they mean by "working" in this context - it's hardly going to get an aircraft off the ground! But very impressive nevertheless.
