Elephant paints self-portrait

This elephant is a true artist. He could use some speed painting training though :)

I'd say the most interesting part is after he draws an eye.

I wonder is this special training or is it elephant itself.

I just hope that they didn't torture the elephant until he could do that.

wow, but kinda weird that the elephant also knew the right colors and stuff.. even if they gave the elephant the colors, how did he know, that now he's painting a flower and thats the right color for it.. They surely tought him that! but still pretty amazing!

I would love to know how to get hold of one of these paintings, and how much they would likely cost...

it's really amazing but this can't be instinctive !! the poor beast probably suffered a lot before it could do that .

Well in my opinion (and i happen to share it with my father who is a proffessional zoologist, biosemioticist, ethologist etc.) the most explainable theory as to how these elephants can paint is that Elephants have extremely good memory-power. And being rather well-tameable (in lack of a better word) their animal raisers have used a certain technique where they take a blunt object and carve a well visible contour (of the picture being drawn) onto it. The elephant is then shown how to and instructed to follow that certain contour with a paintbrush. Having great memories the Elephants quickly memorize the contour - and voila, magic trunklings :)

This is nevertheless absolutely amazing :(|)

Edit:

... take a blunt object and carve a well visible contour (of the picture being drawn) onto a piece of paper with it ...

TO mafu:
Maybe they did give all colours..?
Not sure. And that is amazing, how they do that?

Well...Elephant is got good memory.
Moskwiz is right.

He did remember colours very well...

How did he know what is flower??
I dont know any flower that would live in savannah excepted for about 5, and theyr all yellow.

So how he did now what is flower, or did they show it?

ps.Flower is not so large. :D
