He might have looked for a place with a little more natural cover like a pile of leaves or something.. In the winter mice usually move around under the snow very close to ground.. Had that not happened the mouse would probably have found its way into some other house. Birdie got a good snack out of it though

My dad did something like this. He caught a mouse in a trap, he put it into a bag then into the outside bin. Later he felt sorry for it and went outside to free it, unfortunately it died and he started to cry.
