As much as I love cats, feral cats in cities are responsible for one of the biggest city-bird death-rates as a statistic.. It's seriously damaging city-bird populations =/

#10, wrong! In cities people are responsible for the biggest bird death rate (through a very wide variety of ways, including habitat and nest destruction). Cats actually kill very few birds (numerous studies over the past ten years have shown that they mostly kill/eat mice), and like most predators, they pick off the sickest and weakest (easiest ones to catch) which in turn makes the populations healthier. I'm all for helping the birds, but the blame should be put where it's due, or it's pointless.

Oh dammit, why does snotr have a comment length limit!!!
I had such a nice comment ready to reply to #11 #12 and #13 =/
I'm just going to make a short version then - Please read http://www.sfgate.com/opinion/openforum/article/No-1-bird-killer-is-outdoor-cats-4250692.php
and
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/29/cats-wild-birds-mammals-study/1873871/
and
http://www.abcbirds.org/abcprograms/policy/cats/pdf/Loss_et_al_2013.pdf
etc. etc.
I don't want to paint my own feathers as it were, but I am quite confident that #10 has got it quite wrong indeed and it is important that the public be objectively informed about these kinds of issues. Next to glass surfaces on buildings in cities (check out http://www.flap.org), the feral cat problem is surely if not the biggest then certainly a paramount threat to city-ecology. I can say this with confidence because a) check links above; b) I am a master student of Environmental Management; and c) because my City-Ecology course lecturer said so ^^ I would be glad to point him in your direction if you require more adequate and objective info on the matter.
Rant end.. Really was such a nice first reply I wrote and an absolute shame I couldn't share with you
PS - It really bothers me that people down-vote comments on snotr for completely ridiculous reasons.

#13 and #14 I'm afraid you're linking very bad science. If you don't believe me, join up with one of the groups doing research in these areas rather than just link to the articles all based on the exact same bad information. You can't believe everything you read on the internet, you know.
PS- It really bothers me that some people will continuously post misinformation as truth.

Ok so I didn't go all the way to ScienceDirect and EBSOhost to pile through articles.. Can't be bothered to log-in to university website for a snotr video.
The 3rd link was pretty legit though.. and I wouldn't even be here justifying myself if I hadn't had a lecture on this exact topic last Tuesday!
Hit me up with some links then, to some hard science.. I'm not even debating who is right and who is wrong, I'm debating that the feral-cat issue in urban environments is a huge and critical threat to urban bird populations that needs public attention fast!
