This is a video esophagram, also known as video swallow. The purpose of this test is to determine whether the patient's laryngopharynx is intact and food and fluid passes into the stomach and is not aspirated into the airways during swallowing. This is often done after a patient had had a prolonged period of tracheostomy or intubation and the muscles in those areas are weakened. This test is supervised by a speech therapist who will then decide whether it is safe for the patient to consume food by mouth or if he/she needs more time to strengthen those muscles, during which time the patient gets fed through a tube in the stomach. Interesting stuff. Sorry, didn't mean this to be that long.
