Maillardet's Automaton

A 200 year old Automotron 'Robot' was re-assembled after it was donated as a box of pieces and after years of figuring out how to re-assemble it the amazing machine came to life and was able to write and draw what was in its 200 year old 'Memory'.

Surely, a 200 year old automaton would have used a nibbed pen that needed to be dipped into an ink well periodically? Therefore, why doesn't this one replicate that movement?
