saw a docu about this. they use a piece of wood against the wheels to brake. when there is a train comming they have to stop really fast, take it apart and make way for the train. then assemble it and they go again. when they wanna go the other way. they just lift it and rotate it backwards. cant imagine doing that on the railroad in my country. handy stuff but dangerous.

I rode one of these while backpacking around far east. It's actually a lot better organised that the video tells you. Accidents are rare. The "drivers" seem to know very well when someone's coming and brake in time. We had to carry our "train" aside four times, and the guys coming at us only once. Dunno what's up with that and how it works. Was fun though.
