This is a clip from "Hiroshima", a two part documentary from the BBC. I recommend it.

Someone once said to me that the difference between Germans and Americans is that most Germans feel some guilt over the holocaust, while most Americans view Hiroshima and Nagasaki as an accomplishment.

Does this documentary reveal the name of the war criminal that gave the order to use the two bombs? Oh, sorry, its not called that if he`s on the winning side...

Well said.. :)
But still, some 'experts' still claim that killing of almost everyone in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a good strategic point (since it made Japan surrender so quickly). And even if you count the people that died of the fallout, Holocaust still killed more people than the two bombs. :|

I've read numerous accounts on both sides, and I still think the U.S. was justified. if Japan hadn't been stopped, there would have been a hell of a lot more deaths.

I have to give #3 credit though, it's true. History is told by the victor.

If you had read numerous accounts then you would know that Japan were actually ready to surrender but the US wanted to drop the bomp to keep Russia at bay.

Noone is blaming the US for ALL the ills in the world, just for the ills it's responsible for, and for which it doesn't feel any guilt. Which is completely applicable to you my friend, as after all this shit you boast about taking pride in your double-standard applying country, which is pretty much shown by your nickname.

Don't generalize. I view Hiroshima and Nagasaki as the beginning of the Cold War -- not so much of an accomplishment as it opening a rotting bag of worms that lets off a rather shitty stench.

Someone had to drop the atom bomb at a populated area some time, and that someone ended up being America.. Luckilly the US had goodwill when it happened, and ended up coming from it somewhat ok.. If it were Russia (Soviet) that had dropped the a-bomb you can bet your ass that country would have been hated x18 more than America experiences now..

The US also helps more people throughout the world than the rest of the countries combined. Why is it that your beloved EU isn't lifting a finger to help Myanmar? Selfish, greedy, self-centered ego-maniacs is what you all are. Which country is the ONLY one that persisted and has landed relief flights in Yangoon? It sure as hell isn't any European country - you lazy good-for-nothing parasites.

And, by the way - all you younger posters should go rent and watch the movie "Pearl Harbor" - you know the one with Ben Affleck in it. Take a look at how hard the US was trying to stay out of the war and get Germany and Japan to lay off their imperialistic war mongering. Watch as Japan launched a suprise attack on the US - a country that was not even engaged in the war at that time. Just because the US was victorious doesn't make the US amoral. Most of us in the US view the atomic bombs used during WWII as a necessary evil - what with the likes of most of Europe and the East being overrun and defeated. The US was your last hope - and we delivered.

Blaming the USA for ending the war is excusable if you are a young child who is unfamiliar with history.
If you take into account: Japan's sneak attack, their atrocities in China and throughout the Pacific, cultural inability to surrender, and blind suicidal obedience to the Emperor, you may see the truth.
Add the fact the America was fed up with the bloody nightmare of war that it was dragged into by Germany & Japan, who were bent on world domination. All war is hell and there never is the easy solution that pleases all sides. Truman took upon himself the hardest decision that any political leader ever could. You don't have to condone it, just try to understand it. BTW, I wasn't born in USA!

Killing innocent people is NEVER justified. It doesn't matter if "they" are doing it. The idea is to fight against something erroneus, not doing the same errors as "they".

Also, history is always written by the winner. There are numerous accounts of things the americans and their allies did during WWII that weren't one bit better than the japanese or the germans. Not written in the schoolbooks though.

The atomic bomb was justified. Thousands of more people would have died, had an invasion of the Japanese mainland taken place. None of you seem to understand the warrior/samurai code of honor the Japanese soldiers adopted. To surrender in a fight was complete disgrace. Take a look at the number of Japanese POWs taken during the war and the Kamikazes.

BTW, you Europeans hate Americans. My English teacher lived in France for a couple of years and was shocked at the attitude the French and the French media had towards America. So obviously, an incident such as Hiroshima is used against America. Also, to the poster who said "Someone once said to me that the difference between Germans and Americans is that most Germans feel some guilt over the holocaust, while most Americans view Hiroshima and Nagasaki as an accomplishment." You have clearly never lived in America.
Picture of corjav11 achievements

-1 24. corjav commented 16 years ago

"The atomic bomb was justified." do you know which is the problem with your speech?, that you (and by you, I mean your people), don't think it was wrong. You can say: "if we didn't do that, right now, we will be dead. But we RECOGNIZE that kill people is wrong" and if you are a little sentimental add " and we wish that we could find other way, but we couldn't", and IF those were the reasons because you did it, I would understand it and say: "yeah, you are right". But you don't do that, the speech of your nation is: "we kill them all, because we are the goods, the are the bads, and they have to die, like the shit they are". That arrogance and mediocrity is really annoying.
Picture of Aliquantulus40 achievements

+2 25. Aliquantulus commented 16 years ago

Yeah, cause saying "you Europeans hate Americans." isn't generalizing at all..
Just because you're English teacher experienced hate towards America doesn't justify you saying that every individual country in all of Europe hates America..

But seeing Carlos Mencia ranting about American "supahpowa" concerning nuclear bombs isn't actually helping your cause either.. Patriotism in medium chunks please?

Arsey, I read the article. The Soviet factor in the decision to drop the bomb is nothing new. War is hell. No one can whole-heartedly say - yes, good decision, I'd do it again. As time passes, and the visceral feel of the conflict fades, I'm sure that the consensus will shift away from Truman's decision - as a purely academic assertion. However, there is the very real political reality that war bring with it. No decision is easy when it involves thousands of casualties.
Simply saying 'all killing is wrong' is stupid. Everybody know that. It's just lip service. People who have never experienced conflict can wallow in such platitudes and keep their 'hears pure' while real men risk life and limb for their countries and their leaders. In hind sight, decisions may seem questionable but who will make them in the moment of need, you?

Its funny like some, pretend that the situation is: "Oh, we don't want to go war, we are forced to" and crap like that. Do you know that USA is one of the major countries that inverts on Arms industry?. And all of us know that capitalists don't like to waste their money, so, they have to use them. Do you know in what do you use a machinegun? No, hunting animals is not the right answer. Killing people. And do you know how is called the amount of deaths you need to use all your supplies of bullets. Yes, that's right, GENOCIDE. But someone's likes to call it war, the naive ones call it "invade a country to liberate them", and the puppets call it:"we are real men risking our life and limb for our country and our leader."

One thing that has always cracked me up is how Europe wanted the USA to join the world wars, but not the wars in the middle east.
The message sent to me through these facts reads like this: Help us only

Hitler invaded countries, Saddam invaded countries.
Hitler loved genocide, Saddam loved genocide.
Hitler was a wacko, Saddam was a wacko.

Afghanistan's government was literally controlled by the taliban.

However, staying in Iraq for this long is really not too smart; the middle east will always be war bound, that's not going to change.

Arsey, the article you posted was very interesting.
I never liked the fact that the US dropped those bombs, but I have always believed that they were the sole reason the Japan surrendered.
If what the article says is true, then it would be more like Japan saw they were losing badly, and were thinking of surrender, but Trueman wanted to bomb.
To be honest, though, I would not trust the word of the Japanese historian on this subject, simply because his own country was the site of the bombings.

I cannot believe the sanctimonious bilge that this clip has caused to be written. Some sixty years after the event it is fine to cry Shame USA Shame, but please imagine how it was in July 1945 when the world was exhausted by war. Millions had died, millions had been disfigured, the US and Britain were almost bankrupt and the enormous task of sorting out the refugees and starting to rebuild the shattered countries and lives was just getting underway. The occupation of Okinawa had cost tens of thousands of lives on both sides and the massacres in the Philippines, China, the East Indies, Thailand and the POW camps had been revealed.
The Allies had a weapon that they believed could end the war. Their belief proved true. How many thousands on both sides` were saved by Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
I strongly suggest that everyone stand for a period in silence at the USS Arizona memorial in Hawaii and try to imagine Sunday 7 December 1941, or stand on a battlefield in Europe and see the row upon row of crosses extending it seems to the horizon and then and only then take a high moral stand

No - but you're a complete idiot, too stupid to see the forest for the trees.

Most of the younger generation is far more likely to watch a Hollywood movie than go pick up a history book and spend hours reading. However, as far as introducing the history for the sake of the debate here, both mechanisms would accomplish the very same thing, However, watching the movie is far more appealing than reading dry history books to a generation accustomed to instantaneous gratification.

Yes. A couple in fact.

And I wasn't referring to "him" (i.e. the author of the post to which I referred to in #51). I was referring to the various readers and responders on this board who, for whatever reason, exhibit little knowledge of the events of WWII. It was those people who comprise the audience to which I recommended watching "Pearl Harbor" instead of reading history books (yes - I know that the movie is fiction, but based on fact, and yes, I know that history books go into far more detail). But chances are people are more likely to watch an action movie than sit and read history books, and those that ARE interested in the detailed behind the story will be smart enough to find the appropriate history books without me having to spell that out for them.

And for the purposes of the debate here, the end result is the same, regardless if you watched the movie or read the books.

Ok, for some reason, my post has been posted twice, many apologies all.

USAnumber1......I doubt there is anyone here, who doesnt know about Pearl Harbor. Yes Japan attacked the US first, but like i mentioned earlier, the USA were going to strike the Japanese any day. Prior to that, America traded strongly with the allies. Hence the strong submarine presence in the Atlantic ocean. So one way or another, America was involved in the war, alot earlier than people think. Like Bush said regarding terrorists " If your not with us, you're against us."
And whats wrong with being a Muslim sympathizer????? Muslims are good people. Its just the radicals who wanna blow everything up. You telling me there are no radical Americans.......please.

Solofara........I think alot of people reading this dont see me as an idiot at all. You are obviously one of those elitist old farts who think they know everything about everything. Intelligence has very little to do with age. Some people are 50 yrs old and have no brains.

Americans arnt all war loving wankers. Ive met a few, and they are good people. Every war America has been involved in, there have been American activists against it. Its American politicians and foreign policy that will ultimately bring Americas demise. Regarding the Oil war, all America has done is oust a vicious dictator, and themselves have become the oppressors. Wake up America, its your sons and daughters who are being used as pawns and are coming back in wooden boxs. I didnt see any of Bush's kids fighting in Iraq.

You sound intelligent my friend, but sadly naive and brainwashed. YOUR history is so jaded with "feel good about America and me" that you not only miss the point, you misrepresent it at the same time. Jeesh … how do you expect to be taken seriously suggesting people should watch 10th rate crap movies like “Pearl Harbor” with … (excuse me while I pike) Ben Afflicted!!??

It is a PROVEN FACT OF HISTORY Japan was trying to surrender as America ignored these attempts in order to drop a bomb that would scare Russia. Just as insane and barbaric as Churchill's needless order to wipe out Dresden, (the war was already over) was America's inhuman unnecessary flex of muscle. When people wave the white flag and you draw the gun for revenge, you are as bad as they are. Maybe even a tad worse.

I suppose you also believe we are in Afghanistan and Iraq for democracy and freedom? Tell that to your gas pump next time you fill up!

No nation is perfect. America is a land of immigrants from all over. Even the Moslems assimilate much better than in Europe.
The best of the nations here, working together.

Empty criticism is pure envy and quite pathetic. Might as well criticize humanity as a whole then you won't sound as ignorant.

Japan's cities were fire bombed to shit, no surrender.
They lost their fleets, no surrender.
They lost islands and oil supplies, no surrender.
They got one nuke dropped on their ass, no surrender.
Their Bushido/Samurai code wouldn't allow it.
After the war, their government never claimed they were about to surrender.

How many more American soldiers and prisoners of the Japanese concentration camps would have had to die for you to be satisfied in your ignorant, self-righteous hindsight?

When you are attacked and your citizens are killed you fight back with the weapon at hand to stop it as quickly as possible. Period.

Fuck with the US? Prepare to learn a hard lesson.

An author (Bryan Perro, if you need to know) once said "When you start calling people good or evil, you are bound to be someone else's 'evil'".

That reminded me of a movie scene (sorry, can't remember wich one) where a 7-8 y.o. kid looks at a Nazi helmet with the inscpription 'god is with us'. The kid quickly claimed "No wonder they lost, they thought God was with them, but He was with us ! "

It's always a matter of "they did this to us, we're simply paying back". Picking your side pretty much depends on how far in history you go back.

Shouldn't we go forward instead ?

Astronauts will tell you : "you can't side for one country when you've seen our planet as a whole. All these geopolitical divisions are just an invention of men. We all live on the same land, and we all originated from the same place"

We all just want to live a peaceful life after all. That 'need' for war, for the people in your workplace to 'need' something to hate or to bawl at is probably just an effect of our "too" peaceful lives where aggressivity isn't eliminated naturally. Just get a punching bag, and leave others be.

"Yeah, but the others will jump at me and kill me/convert me/boss me around if I let them be"

What was wrong with calling the Japanese emperor and telling him to look out of his window at 3 pm to see the bomb detonated out at sea?
im sure after witnessing what it could do it would have had the same effect but no typical warmongering America wanted to kill thousands of innocent people to get the message across.
it was not justified it was wrong.

USAnumber1:
Did you know the emperor in person? How the hell are you able to predict what would and wouldn't have happened? :(|)

USAnumber1 , you state this like facts, but after 60 years minds bigger than yours or mine are still discussing the possible outcome had the bombs not been dropped and they still can't come to a conclusion.

Besides, Japanese aren't retarded either, they knew full well the Russians and Chinese were going to look their way with the Germans defeated.
It was impossible for them to hold on for long, bomb or no bomb.

Anyway, destroying a few fleets or a bases with one fell swoop would've been a more humane approach at least.

Oh well, at least it hasn't been used ever since, so it taught us a valuable lesson. Let's be grateful for that and carry on with our lives.

this was an A Bomb (Atomic) not a nuclear bomb (H Bomb). they are completly different. A Bombs are no where near as destructive as modern day nukes, and the death toll for the initial explosion was neglegable. (also americans are evil power grabbing whores who push the world around to get their own needs and will be wiped off the face of the earth by china before the end of this century)

Post 23 .
Originally scalping was unheard of amongst the nations .

The true native warrior would use a stick in battle called a coup stick to merely hit an opponent to show his bravery .
Certain tribes would grow a top knot which would be cut off by a defeating warrior (leaving the defeated warrior in disgrace , an outcast from his tribe) .

The taking of scalps was a French idea as a true certifiable means of identifying a killed native american (for which a fee was paid).
