I noticed 2 errors with the roundabout test. First of all the roundabout only had one lane, which let less cars through. second of all the cars did not blink when exiting the roundabout also making the waiting cars wait for a slightly longer time since they then need to see where the car actually exit.

In some countries the roundabouts are actually called, according to traffic laws, "self-regulating intersections".

They were driving on the wrong side of the road ( as usual ) ;-)

I agree that roundabouts are better in some situations. Here they are compared to a crossroads without traffic lights, with traffic flowing evenly from all sides. They are also without a doubt superior in low traffic zones.

But I think that in a high traffic zone, with uneven traffic flow, a properly configured traffic light intersection would do better. I think the roundabout craze in Europe is happening mostly because it forces traffic to slow down, and city authorities love that.

Roundabouts are also much safer for pedestrians and cyclists (i)

While they were at it making custom street name signs, I was sorely disappointed that they didn't also make a "SOTP" sign :'(

Roundabouts are round i.e. no corners which is an immediate advantage. You wouldn't make a triangular roundabout that would be stupid! The American system is a triangular roundabout with an extra corner. No brainer :)

Roundabout may be more efficient but it won't work in USA. Because the cars there can't go round, they just go straight ... O:)

#5 in France (and Europe too) we also have roundabout with traffic lights changing according to the time of the day and the traffic flow.

Is this a standalone episode or something? I've never seen this one before and I've pretty much watched every episode of Mythbusters.

We had a 4 way intersection using traffic lights outside where I lived and it had quite a few car accidents every month. Then they turned it into a roundabout without traffic lights and it made a huge difference. I didn't expect it, I guess it comes down to traffic lights and people "rushing" the light.

In France for example, roundabouts are a nightmare for insurance companies (and for drivers) because it is very often a 50-50 shared fault, no matter what happened.
Another limitation about this intersection technique happens when you have 2 roundabouts next to each other. It creates bigger traffic congestions than "standard" crossroads because drivers have to wait more.

#13. Snotr needs to sort out its servers. I have a 8 Gig connection and even with no other drain on my bandwidth I still have trouble trying to watch this live. The video keeps pausing for the buffer to fill up.

If they don't get it fixed soon, I might have to consider Trolling elsewhere. :|

Roundabouts are also more fuel efficient. At low speed, the bulk of fuel is used in accelerating a vehicle. Cars are obliged to stop at the four-way, whereas if there's nothing approaching already on the roundabout there's no need to stop.

Roundabouts only work when used properly. I live on the corner of a UK roundabout, and it pains me the number of people approaching to my right who stop to let me onto the junction, unnecessarily holding up traffic behind them because they think they are being "nice".

#16 Your 8gig connection (At work? QoS. At home? Hard time believing) must be at fault here. All is fine here with my 1gig connection.

Here in Dubai, Round about is very common. For me Round about is better and more effective specially in intersections outside the city (low traffic) and mostly doesn't need traffic lights (energy saving :D )

But inside the city, 4 way stop has the edge because it avoids asshole drivers who doesn't know how to give way.

Cheers..

In my country in europe we had a small town where we allways had traffic jams during morining and evening. But then the city decided to change all of the important (and big) intersections with roundabouts (usualy smaller ones) and since then there are no traffic jams. The traffic is not necesseraly allways faster, but much much smoother. But traffic speed improved.

So roundabouts are supperior! :(|)

We have traffic circles in the US (circles for short), but they're usually larger, and often involve more than four entry/exit points. They're also hated with a passion by all drivers. It takes forever to enter the circle (it's like trying to turn onto a highway), and the accident rate is extraordinarily high.

Most normal four-way intersections with this volume of traffic would have traffic lights.

May be the roundabouts are faster..... but place 4 of them in a row ( like we have! ) will less than 100 meters in between and it´s a driffrint storiy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They definitely lower the risk of accident however significantly slow the traffic down in most situation therefore they are being strongly reconsidered in EU. Handle with care.
