Humpbacks are opportunistic feeders (wikipedia). They just saw an easy prey. :D

Actually, orcas do quite often hunt for sport. It's typical that once they've killed the grey whale calf, they eat only a tiny portion (sometimes just the tongue), leaving the rest to rot and be scavenged.

They'll also capture seals and play with them (often still alive) without eating them.

Just be glad that they don't seem interested in attacking humans in the wild.

#3 If I understand you correctly,you are saying that the Humpbacks stopped by for an easy meal of Grey Whale calf? Humpbacks are Baleen whales , meaning they are filter feeders, eating small krill and very small fish;they have no teeth to use for eating another whale.

#6 yes their name killer whales was translated wrongly from another language. the correct translation should have been whale killers because of the fact that they kill other whales as can be seen in this video here 8-)
