I am pleased and proud to announce that I do not own, and have no intention of ever purchasing, a smart phone. Mine is a 7 year old Nokia 1680 Classic. It makes phone calls and sends texts. That's all I need a phone for.

With new battery technology using using cheap and non-polluting materials like graphine, and other advancements like 3d printing this picture could change dramatically in the next 5-10 years. Should be in interesting time.

Phoneblocks and Motorola's Project Ara are some interesting options that can be the first steps towards changing this situation.

The amount of sources displayed in this video definitely make me support this cause.

They draw a very bad image of the situation. I'm not saying that's not the case, I'm just saying that if they had sources or documentaries for people more interested in the subject than just a propaganda like video, they should have shown this. That would make me less skeptical.

In addition, saying that RDC workers are underpaid is very subjective. It is important to compare what is comparable: are they poorly paid compared to the average salary of a Qatari, or are they poorly paid compared to the cost of living in RDC.

#1 are you sure you have it for 7 years? :) nokia 1680 was released in 2008
i still use my old nokia 1110i as "travel phone", battery lasts for around two weeks :)

#5 I think it's fair to assume that when the narrator mentions that RDC workers are underpaid, he is comparing their pay to the average pay of other workers in RDC. Unless you accept this, you are opening almost every video up to such ridiculous analysis ie. when David Attenborough states that Falcons can fly quickly, is he comparing them to other birds or to supersonic jets? Everest is a very high mountain, but not compared to some mountains on Mars. etc. etc. etc.

#6. Yes I think it's been 7 years (more or less). Electronic stuff is on sale where I live much earlier than in other parts of the world.

#1 why you are so radical? Smartphone has a lot of good and helpful soft! For me it is sport exercise schedule, quick noting ideas, never missing important mails! Even my dad uses the drugs scheduling soft! Everything depends on how you look to things! Sorry for my "crooked" english! But still I've learned to speak and write somehow in English thanks to the Internet and new technologies and speaking with foreigners in the Internet! I'm from Kazakhstan!

Just because smart phones are newer does not make the production of the older nokia 3310 / 1110 / 1680 more environmental friendy.

every product ever produced at mass sacale has had something to do with underpaid workers, harfull raw material / production by products.

most of the people who cause this kinda problems by forcing cheap prices due to competitior choice, do not watch this kinda video's anyway so it just helps the already caring people care more and nothing is done about the problems.

#1 It doesn't matter how old your phone is. 7 years ago, this production process was exactly the same.
This documentary for example is from 2004, which could be right around when the materials for your 7 year old phone were mined - enjoy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgpf0ZNUO_Y

And it doesn't matter what electronics you use (TVs, computers, consoles, toys, household electronics). Unless you're Amish, homeless or still use a phone and TV from the 60s, you are a part of this - we all are, because we don't see the consequences.

An old phone doesn't make you a hero.

#15. I don't believe I ever said I was a hero did I?

There are two points here:

1. I see the that function of a phone is to make phone calls. If it does that, then that's great. Whatever else a phone does on top of that is of no interest to me. Apps, software, internet access, email, games. Not interested. It doesn't matter how much the Samsung or Apple marketing men try to convince me that I MUST HAVE THE LATEST SMART PHONE, I'm not interested. I have a PC that does everything else I need to do in this digitally connected world. My PC is a top of the range beast that I built myself, and it makes the fastest most advanced i-phone look like a steam kettle in comparison.

2. A side effect of my not swapping my phone every 18 months as is suggested in the video, surely means that in a small way, I'm helping the planet, wouldn't you agree?

Incidentally, I don't swap my PC every 18 months either. I can just upgrade the parts that I deem require it, thus saving money and the planet again.

In fact, given everything I'm doing for the planet, maybe I am a hero after all. Is it too late to change my user name to 'HeroTesticleTom?

#13 Your English is impressive especially if you are learning from the internet. We would say that your English is "broken" rather than "crooked". There is a lot of useful software or apps that you can get for free or very cheaply once you have a smart phone. I have used mine to study for tests and it's great for light email use. Welcome to the English internet. Watch out for trolls!

this video is just wrong. it mixes too many things and the outcome is just "statistics".

if you want to debate about that one, at least include law/politics/lobbyism/media

people are not wrong for buying smartphones. its the same as everything else, we consume. cars, cloths, fast food..
you need to return more money to the countries were they are doing all the physical work. that requires laws. its not just the people.
