In Romania, you couldn't do such a thing. Every log would get stolen half-way to the destination. :(

#1 actualy they used to do that in Romania also but now this practice is no longer required, nowdays wood is transported by rail or roads which is faster.
Another reason that they don't use this method anymore is because logs become pollutants, when cut wood releases tanins, which lower the pH of water and contain some deadly(for local fish and fauna) substances. So to wrap this up, it's impractical to use this form of transportation for logs, also reqless.

It is not even possible where I live, there is far too much traffic on the rivers .
