Wow, that was a close call for the freeway ... and his car ... and him-self if he didn't make it in time and the car got smashed with him inside and without a seatbelt...

That car might be a manual trans.
If thats the case, it can be very easy to leave it out of gear and not set the parking break.
I don't even set my parking break for regular parking (except hills); just leaving my car in gear has worked so far
