basically the big wheel is rolling on the ruller. the smaller wheels upposite spin cause the free movement of the big wheel on the surface below. the difference in speed is caused by the size difference between the wheels which act as gears.
so: ruller turns the big wheel backwards, the big wheel turns the smaller wheels forward much faster and cause movement of the big wheel forward faster than the ruller.

#6 if you have a background in engineering, you can simply look at the equilibrium of the contact-forces, considering the kinematic constraints (transmission) to figure out which way the wheels will react to an external force. If not, well, you have a lot of studying to do if you really want to understand it.
