I wouldn't pay a penny over $44.000.000 for it ;) My grandfather died a couple of years ago and left me a violin and a painting, one was a Stradivari and the other a Rembrandt, unfortunately Stradivari couldn't paint and Rembrandt made really shitty violins :'(

To demonstrate the sound of this highly prized intrument they could have tried recording it somewhere other than what sounds like a cavernous bathroom.

In the equivalent of a blind taste test, 10 "renowned" violinists tended to prefer new violins over Stradivarius violins after playing them without being able to see them, a new study has found.

These instruments are famous for the quality of sound they produce. However, the many blind tests from 1817 to the present have never found any difference in sound between Stradivari's violins and high-quality violins in comparable style of other makers and periods, nor has acoustic analysis.

Nothing like listening to a world class instrument on a compressed video via 1" laptop speakers... FTW! :D

#1 Lol love it , A Guy I love on Youtube an electronics engineer called Dave Jones (EEVblog) said once while ranting on about audiophiles "If your going to pay a 1000$ for a cable you are going to hear the difference , Just don't expect your friends too"

And the same goes for this over priced bit of wood. Fair enough it might sound some what better than a run of the mill violin, but hell.. is it 40 million dollars better, I highly doubt it.

#1 It takes a $100,000 modern instrument to rival their tone and acoustic power, which is saying a lot for something that is over 300 years old. And the fact that a 300 year old instrument has held up this well says a lot for them too.

$45M... perhaps not. But "bit of wood" certainly not.

If i was holding that thing i would not have dared to tighten the bow(0:04) with the same hand as i was holding the violin with. One little mistake could be quite expensive.

The price is not because of the sound of it, it's collectible, valuable mostly because it's rare. Stradivari also shaped the sound of every violin and viola we have today.

#9, I was thinking the same thing - maybe one day a guitar like Clapton's ($1m) will also sell for this kind money!

#10 It's possible i guess when it gets to be 300 years old but the amazing thing about this is the sound he was able to get out of something created with the tools they had back then.
