its a combination of the Reader-head position and the speed and direction of the Magnetic-disc turning. i think..

in the bad old days, they used a voice coil to position the head on a hard disk drive. looks as if it is making a comeback

back in the day i had a few FDD make a sound like this.....not the stars war theme tho....loop :20 over and over again and thats what its sounded like lol.

Back in the days there several programs that could make music come out of the 1541 floppy drive for the commodore 64.
It could be bad for the drives head alignment though :|
