Yea that driver looks like they are racing for pink slips and there is 10 Kilos in the truck. In contrast the passenger is watching Indian porn or something on the dash.

He seems to have a system for rev limiter between the gear, looks very intentional and he can shift.

#8 I'm pretty sure a Nissan with 125 BHP DOES NOT sound like this one!

This guy could use some instruction on how to shift.
You do not let the engine bang on the rev-limiter for two
seconds before up-shifting if you want to run your best time
in a drag race.

#10 Too right, he needs to learn how to change gears for sure.
Picture of blue_alien41 achievements

+7 12. blue_alien commented 10 years ago

#10 Actually, the right moment for shifting is a combination between revs and speed, if he had the revs but not the speed he would be shifting early, or I may be totally wrong because every car is a different story and needs it's way of driving. I think that if he won the race we should not judge his shifting skills. :D

#7 No he can't shift. The shifting into 2nd and 3rd been much too late

so since when do "family" cars come with sports exhausts turbo/oil pressure gauges.

Just like #12 says that it could be something the driver shoudl watch because before shifting to 2nd gear he was looking carefully to the dashboard; maybe the car should reach a ceratin speed before shifting to 2nd geard. Shifting to 3rd gear looks to me OK.

#8, this looks like a 4rd gen maxima, in which you could literally bolt-in the VQ35DE 3.5L motor found in the 350Z and G35. This power plant was good for nearly 300hp stock and an easy 400hp without boost or spray. That being said, the 996 Porsche Turbo had nearly 450 hp stock and was good for 0-60 in under 4 seconds. The Porsche SHOULD have won. Obviously both a bad Porsche driver AND a fast non-stock Nissan.

#12 & #16 There are optimum times for shifting that vary with each car, true but typically power will increase as the engine RPMs increase, but only up to a point, and then the power begins to taper off. That point is just BEFORE you hit the rev-limiter,which is what was happening before he shifted into second gear.
A tachometer with a shift-light would be very helpful to this guy.

#18 What about wheel spin though ? if your wheels are spinning and you're hitting the rev limiter and you change gear and suddenly you have traction , you may find yourself suddenly at 2k rpm or so with no power what so ever ?

Looks to me like he was judging when he was at the right speed to change gear rather than bothering with the rev limiter for the first gear or too,

Just judging from the timing on the video from initial GO to let off, it would appear this guy is running mid to high 12s in the quarter mile. Best information I could find for stock Maxima times were low 14s (14.2-.3), The gauges on the A pillar would indicate this isn't a stock vehicle either.

According to this article from Motor trend..
http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/1305_2014_porsche_911_turbo_first_look/

The last few years worth of Stock 911 variant Turbos have been running mid 10's.

Translation? Fast Maxima, but the Porsche driver musta sucked or is in a normally aspirated 911 variant which will typically run mid 12's.

Loving all the 'no shit' comments here.

He is obviously running a high-rpm turbo with a big power spike right before the revlimiter and doesn't want boost to drop into a hole by shifting early. That's harder than you might think, because your speedometer will show the speed of the wheels spinning at the limiter (unless you have a GPS tracker) and not the actual speed of the car, which you then have to guess. That means you have to make a quick call how long to hit the limiter, before you start loosing acceleration. The perfect shift isn't always right before the red line or limiter, because it depends on the amount of traction you get at launch and over the course of the run. 2nd to 3rd he apparently didn't need to hit the limiter as it seemed like he lost a little bit of time there.

Guys, the red-line/shift point is always BEFORE the rev-limiter activates. The rev-limiter is there to keep you from blowing up your engine in case of a blown shift, not to tell you when to shift. (i)

#22 No shit again, genius. But that's only true for a certain engine setup. With a big turbo, the max power might even be past the rev-limiter, which is why hitting the limiter makes sense there in some cases. It is easier than trying to moderate the throttle in a situation like that (pretty much impossible anyway in 1st gear at high revs with a big turbo). That is a relatively common thing in overpowered sleeper cars - if you know a little bit about drag racing. Apparently that is too hard to understand for some people, even after a lengthy explanation.

#26 You said "With a big turbo, the max power might even be past the rev-limiter, which is why hitting the limiter makes sense there in some cases."
WHAT? Once the rev-limiter is hit your engine is losing power because the fuel is being cut and ignition is being retarded to where power drops off.
The only way bouncing off the rev-limiter makes sense is if you have a two step limiter so that you can set the first step at say 4000 rpm to build boost for the launch and then have the second step set just past your peak horse power to keep from over-revving. A two step limiter allows for retarding the ignition and controlling fuel cut. Most factory rev-limiters are designed to only cut off fuel which is the worst thing to do to a boosted engine, especially if you are also spraying. That will cause a severe lean condition and probably blow the engine. Some guys that are using a two step limiter will rev the engine to the limiter just to hear all the popping and backfiring taking place as the retarded timing causes un-burnt fuel to explode in the exhaust manifold which eventually will cause damage to the engine.
As far as knowing "a little bit" about drag racing,I spent many years strip and street racing my 1969 396/375 Nova and also traveling around the NHRA drag circuit as one of the mechanics on this very popular super stock AMX.
