I am proud and not proud to say this was in my country, Portugal
Proud because back then it was considered by many drivers the best rally in the championship.
Not so proud because it was this crowd behaviour that lead to a tragedy back in 86.
A fan was on the inside of the corner and the portuguese driver of the Ford RS200, to avoid running him over, turned to the right, unbalancing the car and plunged into the crowd onto the outside of the corner
Check that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3JaOKRvPH0#t=136

#11 no, trubo was useed, Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, Porsche 911 Turbo, Renault 5 Turbo 2 ...
It was groupe B
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B
It was a "no limit" category (the only one was the design and the number of cars produced in series)
I think, there is nothing equivalent today in rally.

All it would take is the navigator to sneeze and it would be all over, actually and literally

#12 There's still Pikes Peak, which is about as nuts as Groub B was. The 80s were right at the intersection of almost no safety measures and skyrocketing turbo technology. Something like Group B would be totally fine today, as safety technology and regulation has come a long way, catching up with engine component development.

On the subject of crowd endangerment, Röhrl once looked back in an interview and said, "They should have put us all in a long line and punched every one of us in the face." [for taking such a risk]
It couldn't happen today, and that's just one more reason why Group B is the stuff of legends.

Audi's are luxury cars, but this one doesn't look particularly comfy, nor are the interiors all that nice
