Schlieren Optics
Demonstration of an optical technique that allows us to see small changes in the index of refraction in air. A point source of light is reflected from a concave mirror and focused onto the edge of a razor blade, which is mounted in front of the camera. Light refracted near the mirror and intercepted by the blade gives the illusion of a shadow.

#2 You could intercept stealth troops or vehicles with this technique, even a tiny movement is noticed.

#2 tons! I can be used to make soundwaves visible for example. It could be used for experimentally verifying computational fluid dynamics calculations. For the development of ventilation systems for cars or aircraftcabins currently particles have to be mixed into the air to measure flow in a 3D-space. And also it looks awsome!
