Spoon carving

What starts off as a lot of a wood takes a long time to turn into not a lot of spoon.

My god you made a meal out of that. My mother has made a whole range of spoons without a horse. Concentrate on your beard.

Lovely to watch and fantastically skilful, but what's the point these days of making an implement that a machine can make in a single second resulting in a more hygienic end product? Not in any way disrespecting the craftsman, just asking the question.

I can remember sitting in the common room of a Youth Hostel some years ago....watching a guy make a wooden spoon using nothing but a sheath knife, and he did almost as good a job as this guy.

When I was a kid we made butter knives in school. The first one looked horrible but the 5th one actually got pretty nice! Still have it today, 30 years later.

All this work because he's too lazy to go to the kitchen and pick one up.

At 1:14 is where I'd end up having to choose whether to start over or make a smaller spoon.

"So what did you do today son?"

"Well mum, I chopped down an entire forest and turned it into a drawer full of spoons."

Is this huge monster of a spoon supposed to go into someones mouth? I can see the point, that eating soup would go much faster though.

What an absolute waste of wood and we didn't even get a close up of the finished product. My dog chewed one of these the other day I had no idea someone had spent an entire afternoon making it, then made three more (that's two days work and sold them in Tesco's for 99p :S
