If a business offers something it should be prepared to follow through. He's dead right. Businesses rip consumers off time after time and yet when this consumer stands up for his legal rights you people think he's in the wrong? Come on...

#2 "Common sense" isn't the way business works. That's why we have consumer laws - to protect us from their sleazy practices. The manager was a nice guy in the end, agreed #4, but his initial wriggly attitude is exactly what I expect of business. He could have seen right away that instead of trying the stalling tactic the simple honest straightforward way of dealing with this was to hand over 15 cents' worth of guacamole instead of spending 50 cents of his company's time in arguing about it.

It's amazing how many people here are still unfamiliar with the concept of a joke. Simply hop on the "stupid 'muricans and their attorneys" bandwagon and feel like a hero.

And despite the fact that the coupon is obviously not meant for your own sandwiches and the guy is clearly being a douche on purpose for comic effect, he is completely right legally speaking (unless the small print says something else) - for good reason as #5 has already pointed out. If common sense was the law, slavery and denying service to certain races would still be legal. In fact we still see aftereffects of that kind of common sense in the South - because slavery, racism and segregation was so common until those damn constitutional lawyers and human/civil rights activists started causing trouble.
Common sense is absolutely not the best thing since sliced bread. In fact, in it's worst forms, it can undo much more progress than has been accomplished because of it. That's why we have a legal system that ideally balances the playing field between the small individuals and big institutions.
Without that, you basically get Russia: majority opinion = common sense = the law, unless a big government-friendly business disagrees

Not so serious, he was trying to be humorous. What I objected to was him wasting food.

Many fast food restaurants have a notice at the entrance barring you from bringing food inside
if it was not purchased there.
Some localities have food and health regulations against it too.
