I did a Google search and couldn't find sound scientific data and neither seem the authors of the articles you linked to be able to. At least they did not bother to share it.
I still don't think that the danger of "...irritation in your puppies digestive system, particularly if eaten in large quantities..." justifies insulting everyone laughing at a dog making lemon-faces.
