Looks like he is using a refrigeration compressor for an air compressor.
Low volume but very high pressure capable.

I'm surprised it failed in the tread. I'd expected the sidewall or valve to fail first.

Looks like there might have been a nail or screw in it. You can see the hole clearly where his thumb is at 1:55

for the people using bar as their tire pressure unit, 170psi is 11.72bar and for a tire that is ALOT :D

#6 I was thinking that a tire could handle more. I once put 12 bar in a coke bottle (compressed air rocket). The bang was louder than this video's one, but it flew a lot higher.
