This makes me even more grateful, I have Tetrachromacy ( it means I see more colours than most people...handy when you work in the photographic trade ). I literally can't even begin to imagine what the world would be like without colour...mind numbing stuff.

I am very sceptical that this guy could only see shades of grey. For one thing the company that sell these glasses would have required fairly exacting details of the users condition before they could supply the correct lens for his problem what ever it was, so it couldn't be a surprise.
I am also very surprised that after a gap of approximately 18 years (guess) that he would be able to instantly connect the colour names to the colours he was seeing and even more surprised that his brain was able to make sense of all that new information so instantaneously. I think it is more likely that he was colour blind to a lesser degree possibly red green and the glasses were allowing him to separate the shades which is what they are designed to do.
only my opinion.
