Space debris buildup from 1957 to 2015

This visualisation shows the accumulation of space debris around Earth from 1957 to 2015 using data from https://www.space-track.org. It currently stands at roughly 20,000 pieces.

Thankfully there is a lot of space in space. Still it looks like an outerspace trash can! :squirrel: lol

Objects are tracked down to 5cm, I think, so some objects are pretty small...nevertheless...

Seems to show that there is debris only at certain latitudes. Anyone know if that is the case?

#8 Orbital Mechanics/Dynamics ;) To escape to another planet you first need the right orbit around earth. Hohmann transfer.

#8 The disitinct ring you can see is the geostationary orbit. It is chosen for many applications like broadcast and communication satellites, because the satellites position remains fixed relative to a point on earth's surface. Also, the trajectory of most rocket launches is parallel to the equator to add the spin of the earth to the rockets velocity and save fuel. That explains why most space junk accumulates near the equatorial orbit.
