Why aren't the bees more aggravated about people taking their food? I appreciate every single one of those tiny creatures <3

#1 That's what the smoke is for, keeps em from bee-ing so aggressive. (sry, couldn't resist)

Isn't it easier just to grab the whole thing and run?

#6 if you grab the whole thing, you grab the queen with it. They'll be following and stinging you for days.
I'm guessing these guys have a way to tell that the piece they took was the most recently constructed part of the nest, so they know the queen can't be in there.

#6 Leave the hive intact and you can return later for more honey. That was a very big hive and probably wouldn't take the bees that long to rebuild the broken parts or even expand the hive more.

When you smoke bees they feel under attack by nature and the bees, all female, fill up with honey to protect their food source. This makes them docile, sort of like we feel after Thanksgiving dinner. So they aren't inclined to sting. Aren't inclined, but not a guarantee. Some could sting, but these guys know what they are doing and are going gently into each move. By preserving the rest of the hive, they can come back and rob it again.

Just read my comment from 4 years ago and a year ago, have to say it still made me laugh a little. I be back either in 2021 or 2024 and see if it's still holding out, unless Covid-19 gets me of course. <3
