"How do you know she is a witch?"
"She turned me into a newt!"
"A newt?"
"I got better..."

Usually i have a faint idea on how ppl do magic tricks, i always look for the trick itself rather than the act. But this time, i really, really have no idea how she did that... The only thing im thinking is that the cradle she was sitting in might had some sort of morse code mechanism so she could feel it in her hand. But still, the expiration date at the end there, wtf... I'm lost.

"What am I thinking?" ... "I don't see a lot"... -_- LOL

Perfect and hilarious ending to this clip. Not even gonna try to figure out how they did it, but its a bad-ass trick. Color me impressed.

With televised acts it is hard to tell exactly what is going on, because lots of clues are edited out.

It is no coincidence these kind of mentalist acts are done mostly by couples, because they have a complex coding system that needs years to master to perfection and constant every day practice. This is what I think is going on:

They have a code system for typical items people carry with them. This can be a numerical code or the way Tommy phrases the questions. In their case it is both.

With the lipstick the information is transmitted by a numerical code via squeezing of the hand. Two numbers are sent. First an identifier for the Item and then the shade number.

The next act with the cellphone is coded in speach patterns. "Lets start with this." is code for cell phone, "What am I holding?" could be code for credid card for example. You get the picture. "So, the color..." means white, "What color is it?" could mean black.
The provider is the tricky part. My guess is that we either do not see everything due to editing, or that he felt lucky guessing the biggest provider in the states, and had another "out" in case he was wrong (something like "then someone next to you must use AT&T" ). It wouldn't matter if he got it wrong, because he had already established an impressive history of hits.

For acts like the one with the eye drops mentalists often use a device called a "thumper", that can be strapped to your upper leg and transmits morse. #2 could be on to something with the suspiciously chunky swing set as well. The same technique as with the lip stick is used here, and Tommy has a clever way of operating the transmitter (perhaps squeezing it in his underarms).

The basics of such an act are pretty easy to understand and are described in Corinda's Book from 1961, but you really have to appreciate the amount of practice that goes into it to be that smooth!

#7 thank you for an excellent analysis. About the shade on the lipstick (curse 50 shades of grey that makes me feel dirty every time I write shades). I didn't see Tommy read the bottom number. And about the eye drops, what if they picked an item they didn't have a code for?

My earnest opinion about Amelie is that she scares me a bit. But she is too charming...

Wow, I don't how they did this if this a trick or not. But the expiration date ... I was bluffed.
Really talented.

#10 These code systems are fairly extensive and cover most items people carry around. In the odd case they get an exotic item they usually describe it in terms of shape, material, color and move on to the next. They also can literally spell out the word using their codes. They have multiple phrases that correspond with a letter of the alphabet or they use morse code. This method involves a lot of chatting which can get pretty obvious in the long run. For that reason they memorize a huge database of items.

may I add sound systems that transmit sound directly in to the ear via skull bones like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_conduction but then more in this size: http://www.iphoneness.com/news/cynaps-iphone-bluetooth-headset-hat-w-bone-conduction/ which can hide pretty easily in her hair.

how the information is sent to hear i'm not sure about. could be something like the guy is a tranquilest and speaks very softly or he has some other means of telling her what she needs to know like text messaging which gets read out to her hearing 'aid'.

specially when he says check me that i'm not wearing anything at 04:30... all I can think of: you are wearing something

and for #10
he looks at the shade (ooohh dirty feelings) directly at 03:25 which is written on the Top. he also checks the provider of the iPhone at 04:07.

#13 The bone conduction method would work great with a third person in the loop, but texting or covertly wispering does not seem feasible to me. It would be a great idea for spiritualist scammers, though.

I missed the bit where he looks at the provider (well spotted). That makes it a whole lot easier. "the provider" then clearly signals At&t, which makes sense, because he uses the simplest phrase for the most common provider. If it was something more exotic he would have to ask something along the lines of "NEXT, WOULD you be so kind and TELL me the provider, PLEASE, if I MAY ask?". With such a sentence he could spell out the first 5 letters of the provider.

After I spent some more thought on this I am pretty sure I figured out how he transmits the pulses. When he is in plain side he taps her hand while holding it. Then he uses speech patterns to code the cellphone. With the eye drops he stands still in a place where his feet are hidden from view. That makes me think he has a transmitter in his shoes. There are sets you can buy and hide in your heels. The pulses can be triggered by operating a button with a toe, or a circuit can be closed by tapping the shoes together.

The talented one is not particularly the girl, he learnt their code and is a good impressionist.
