Liddiard wheels

Canadian, William Liddiard’s successful "omni-directional" wheels prototype. They consist of a specialized roller-equipped rim that can move horizontally and a tire that is rounded like a donut. This is a world first bolt-on application for anything with wheels. The wheels are a "proof of concept" prototype right now, but Liddiard says the design would allow them to be made as durable and safe as standard automotive wheels. The wheel can hold ten times more than the other [wheels], while maintaining speed”.

i admire this guy... had an idea.. made the sketches.. fabricated the tyres.. the rims.. controls
and all this in his garage :)

Great if you need to turn the car round in the drive. Not so great if you actually have to get somewhere like the shops.

#2 not really -- take a look at the Canadian flag in the background - the turning part has been sped up a lot and it's still slow. i hope the guy didn't quit his day job yet :)

Gotta think larger scale. Imagine an industrial version for cranes or trucks that already moves slowly, it would be revolutionizing if it became a standard within certain applications.
