I never understood how someone can spend 50.000+ on a single party? Catering for 150 people, band, photographer, a movie, you will in all likelihood will watch again a single time and a vacation to a lonely beach, at the other end of the world, which is 4 times the prices of a lonely beach nearby.
The party lasts less than 4 hours for the majority of the guests and is such a stress that you will have 7 of the 10 most major fights in your entire relationship during its preparation. Aunt whatshername will be so drunk, that she embarrasses herself and her entire branch of the family. All the guest will spend another 50000-75000 on clothes and gifts, most of which will never be used.
For an investment of 100000-150000 it'd better be the best day of the couples life. Sadly, you will try convincing yourself it was when you see the bill. And thats just an average wedding...

#3 You summed it up really well! And some of these weddings aren't even fun, because they are stiff, over organized and the food is crappy...okay, off I go to my son's wedding in 10 days, we'll see how it will be...as the mother of the groom, I got to look kinda decent, but got a cool dress, shoes, and simple jewelry at an off-price store for a total of $100, and a shopping savy girlfriend who is critical when it comes to clothes and honest tells me I look great. I'm good to go!

Who the heck does up both buttons on their jacket?....my dear chaps...on a two button jacket its just the top button you do up, on a three button...just the middle one. ( to many years working in menswear )!

Completely agree it's a massive rip-off. Most families know this but are so guilted into it they just roll along with it. A neighbor of mine has a son who married into a wealthy family, they asked the groom's family to do the rehearsal dinner, I think he said they paid $10-15k on it, he wished he had just given them the money. BTW, they divorced 5 years later. I think I remember a stat that said most couples spend way more time planning their wedding then they do the rest of their lives.
I place a lot of the blame on women, I don't think any of the men care about this stuff, but "you better let her have her way or else"!

#6 I totally agree, I blame the women too. I also think it's all BS that the bride's family should pay for the whole wedding, I think the costs should be shared and the bride and bridegroom should both make decisions about the wedding, after all it's the groom's day too. The way it used to be is completely old school.

#7 I agree on the shared costs, but if the women are going to go crazy, then it's sort of fitting their family pays for the crazyness!
Actually what seems to drive it to me is the whole "what the other women think" conundrum, when a woman is setting up an event even if it's just a small affair in the home, they go crazy over the details and a lot of that is they're scared to death what the other women will think or what'll they'll talk about after the event with their friends So in essence, if women would just all agree to give each other a break, there'd be much less stress before and during the event and everyone can calm down and enjoy themselves. I can dream.

#8, I agree, women can be very competitive in those areas, I never really did get that, but you know at the end of the day, people have to lear that keeping up with the Joneses may not be a realistic goal, nor a goal worth attaining.

Weddings are unnecessarily expensive, divorces are unavoidably more expensive
