That is the sound of sleep aptnea. He is struggling for breath because his tongue falls back in this throat and he can't get air. He needs to have a sleep test immediately.

#3, #4, #5, #7 and #9 are so correct with this...luckily the CPap is a fairly easy fix, the guy will feel he slept like a baby the next morning.
