I find this very interesting but wouldn't some have been using maces, warhammer, two handed hammers and things like that for the crushing effect? Swords require quite a bit of skill to use in combat as you can see in this video where crushing weapons would have caused a bit of damage on direct hits?

#3 the sword was part of the daily armament (such as the dagger or the buckler) and was used by everyone : noblemen and commoners, even women. In London, the arm drill was taught by fencing teachers that could be butchers or carpenters (they were probably related to the criminal underworld). The weapon regulation was quite late, which might explain that - contrary to the idea we have of Medieval Ages fights with weapons such as maces - swords and its handling were of a very common use.
I am personally amazed by the many uses that can be made of a sword (even as a hammer).

Ok, I can't help but say what I'm thinking. Dark Souls There's even the roll. One guy is wearing what seems to be the inspiration for the Royal Swordsman Armor from Dks2.
