The reverse and the 1st gear are not synchronized that's why you can hear the transmission whining in the beginning of the video...

If your brakes completely fail, shifting into reverse is one way to bring your vehicle to a stop.
With an automatic transmission it is easy to do and doesn't always cause damage to the drive train.
You can tell in this video that the guy is standing on the gas pedal hard to keep the tires spinning
in reverse.
