The dog is indeed smart - dogs often drown in pools when the water is low (looks high enough here though) as they cannot climb out, swimming until exhaustion.

A true genius dog would have grabbed the leaf scooper in his mouth, and reached it over to hoist the ball out!

My parents old dog would do kind of the same thing. She didn't chase a ball but would run and jump on the styrofoam platform my dad made for her and then ride it like a surf board to the other side. She knew that the faster she ran before she jumped on, then the further the foamboard would float. then she'd jump out, run around and do it again!! I wish I had a video, but this was "the old days"!!
