Heatherwick's Rolling Bridge

The Rolling Bridge was designed by the award-winning Heatherwick Studio, working with structural engineers SKM Anthony Hunts.

Installed in August 2004, the Rolling Bridge spans an inlet of the Grand Union Canal, towards the head of Paddington Basin

Why do they need a rolling bridge there? Why not a normal fixed bridge? After all, there doesn't seem to be any boat traffic there for that small canal inlet.

The way it bends and roll out is inspired by nature. Lots of technology is based on what we see there.

#1 I would guess it is there as art as much as a practical bridge. At about 35 sec. in the video, it looks like the canal is a dead end, or is a boat slip. I see no reason for the rolling bridge other than and art exhibit or as an engineering test.

Definitely a very flash bridge, perhaps they should have made the outside out of solar panels so that is was free powered.

I actually went to see this about 2 weeks ago, and having only heard it was a bridge that rolled up I was expecting something bigger.
Apparently they only roll it up about once a week or so to show the mechanism. The rest of the time it just remains left open / unrolled.

#3 The canal does continue on and about where you remark time-wise, 0:37 you can see a person walking from the left. If you walk down towards the building you can skirt that lock that the bridge spans and come back to the path, and then continue on along the canal. From the look of it, that lock seemed to be an original feature, with the bridge a later addition.
