Fake... somewhat.

The balls activate a sound when they hit anywhere on the panel. The sounds are sequenced into the music, so it doesn't matter where the ball hits the panel, the next sound in the "song" is played. The performer only has to worry about the timing of the balls, not the place where they hit the panel.
