norton doesnt do much of anything. thats why you need "norton removal tool"
there are currently no known programs for completely preventing threats. however, you can combine programs and tools to get the best possible protection features. this is a good combination to use: (note: even though this may protect you, you will never be 100% protected. it is a good idea to pay close attention of any user settings within these programs in order to ensure the best protection)
sorry for not giving much info on them. many are freeware, some you have to pay for. some of you may find these for free anyway
1: AVG internet security (standard AV/antispyware/rootkit)
2: Zone Alarm Pro (+ deactivate antivirus for compatibility)
3: Zone Alarm ForceField
4: mvps Hosts file (+ lock hosts file in zone alarm)
5: bug off (for deactivating hacker exploits and worms doors)
6: windows worms doors cleaner (another)
7: AD Aware Se
8: Spybot Search and Destroy
9: un hack me (anti-rootkit: in case your user interface gets hijacked)
10: CCleaner (cleans unnecessary garbage)
thats just for security. in case you actually get infected and for some reason cant remove the infection, which you probably wont if you have those programs, than you can always use the following tools:
1: hijack this (removes exe files in start up)
2: norton removal tool (yeah, im proud of it)
3: regassassin (will kill registry keys that deny access and deletion)
4: fileassassin (will kill files that deny access and deletion)
also, you might want to fine detail your computer or optimize:
1: tuneup utilities
2: jv 16 powertools
of coarse that seems like a lot to use but its well worth it. id rather have a clean computer, than no computer
the worst problem in having so many tools is when you need to do a system install. then i use the following tools:
1: multiset (this will create a custom installation pack)
2: PC Decrapifyer (this will remove junk software that comes with windows)
3: Driver Backup (backs up drivers in case you accidentally remove them)
anyway, enjoy.
please post any tools you think should be looked into

If you're forced to use Windows with an internet connection, you also might want to consider using a tool like Secunia (https://psi.secunia.com/) to be sure that your other normal apps are up to date.

#3 I so agree with you. Norton slows your computer down as slow as a zombie. And since you are giving a lot of the computer control to Norton, Norton is the botnet.

Norton sure didn't save my computer. And after seeing this piece of crap condescending advert, that's two sure reasons to never go near them again.

the only people who benefit are the programmers of anti virus software.. so tell me, where do the bots and trojans and whatever come from? =)

All Google technologies are based on Symantec products, that's why it's operating so fast.
