Why do they search for other planets when we don't even have discovered the full extent of our own planet? (the sea)

I dont think technology is something "scientists can sit around by, and develop successfuly".
Money is needed, time is needed, and sometimes things just stall, because of lack of ideas. No money can buy you ingenious ideas.
Scientists is not an organisation like government etc. etc., they live same lives we do - they just do different things from us.
In my opinion - we will never be able to build a space ship that travels as fast as light. Either earth will destroy us while we try, or we will destroy ourselves first.

@ #1 it is important to answer one of the biggest questions,
'Are we alone?'
It is important incase we ever need to move, for whatever reason.
And history proves to us that most discoveries are done by chance. Hardly ever do they discover something with a set goal. Hence the name 'discovery'. So it is always good and important to focus in all directions.
Last but not least, they are constantly trying to develop known technologies. But it will speed up once the need for it arises. Once we run out of oil you will see a substitute for it. Once the earth is about to perish we will find lightspeed.
It is what people need. And right now we do not need any of the above. Therefor the focus (and thus the means to) lay elsewhere. Nicer cars for example.
Any idea why the 'Dark Ages' where called the Dark Ages? It was because it was cheaper to have slave labor then 'inventing' new things. So money was spend on wars to get slaves rather then on scientists.

For the people still thinking lightspeed is fast. It would take 4 years to get to the nearest star at lightspeed or near lightspeed. Although you wouldn't age much at those speeds back on earth time passes a lot faster.

SETI is just an excuse to DDoS the whole universe and claim to have a good reason for doing so..

#10 my lowest rating! sorry religious people. please forgive my sarcasm. i didnt mean to offend any of you. its just my sense of humor.
#11 you claim that once the earth is about to perish we will see light speed... i doubt it.
if there is any chance to colonize space it must be done before earth perishes. if earth perishes either we will perish with it or humanity and our global economy will be driven back into the stone age. at that point we will be lucky if our crops grow each year.
humanity is an immature species which insists on continuing primitive, naive and self destructive traditions. in this world we live in we have a golden opportunity to expand into the next level of civilization.
the sad thing is that a lot of people just dont care.

"Dear MiMe" #1.... You are so mistaken. We don't have the right technology to reach the speed of light - educate yourself - and even if we did have it first we have to discover the right planet before we can travel, so that we don't get there for nothing and make a waste of technology and stuff. As I said before - educate yourself then add some intelligent comment!!!

I read about this article in the paper when it came out, whats really cool is that science said that only the type of star our sun is supports life, therefore they've never looked at red dwarfs as a potential life giving sun. But if you remember the star wars where young luke skywalker grew up, the planet has two suns. One of which is a red dwarf!!!!! DA DA!!! The force is out there!!!!!!!
