Why is this a British cop? The incident is in Seattle. The cops are dressed like American cops, and the police statement is done with an American accent, by someone not dressed like a British cop. So the title of the vid should be "American cop sends innocent guy into a coma".
#3 as for running, its a natural instinct. People chase you for no good reason, you run for your life. It takes time to process the fact that its a cop and that you should stop. Or maybe he thought they finally caught up with him for those parking tickets he didnt pay last week.
Its no reason to use that much force. The cop should have caught him - bear hug and to the ground, not slammed him into the wall, if they thought he was someone else.

ditto #1, how many times do you see this? 250 lb. cop and a 150 lb. perp. Plus the fact they said he was the wrong guy too. I don't blame the law for enforcement, but get the communications right. If I were that guy I would've tried to move out of the way of that freight train too.

the tragic accident is the part where he hit his head on the wall, but he should never have been shoulder charged into the wall.
I think that classifies as 'excessive force', it's not like the dude was running fast, the fat copy was just being lazy and maybe trying to impress some football scouts.
Maybe he was in a hurry to get to the doughnut shop.

It's true that there are a lot of bad cops out there.. but there are also a lot of decent ones. I'm in no way supporting what happened in this video.. but people should not be so quick to judge.
There is obviously a story behind what happened, maybe the officer was justified maybe not. Unless you are in the cops shoes the moment everything goes down, it's hard to understand why they do the things they do. The officer could have just been power tripping cause he was new, or had knowledge the suspect was armed with a knife and wanted to knock the suspect down before apprehending.
Being in a public place possibly armed with a knife / possibly smacked up on drugs: they can't shoot the guy, and they often cant taser the guy; they obviously don't want to get stabbed themselves so if I was in the cops shoes and someone was running from me i probably would have done the same thing. The officer wasn't aiming for the guys head he was simply trying to knock the guy down, and it is tragic that he went down so hard with such brutal injuries.
Just remember, if your ever in a life or death bind they will be the ones putting their life on the line to help you out. As much as some people love to criticize the police, modern society can't function without them.

I totally agree with the cop and think he did the right thing.
1) You are told that is the man and you run after him.
2) He runs away from you, you run faster.
3) You have been told he is armed and dangerous; so when you get to him, you do not walk up and politely ask him to show his hands. You body check the guy to the ground and cuff him the hard way.
4) Moral of the story, if you do not play nice with the cops, they will not place nice with you.
#5 and #10, seriously? Your natural instinct is to run from the cops? Wow. The correct natural instinct is to STOP. Kinda the exact opposite...

Actually we never see him running. The cop must have seen him stopped too. And i bet he saw the wall behind him. man. Wall. Push. Head. Yeah, american cops' thinking. He could have killed him and he probably did. Is that the cops work out there? Cause some of you guys sound like it was completely normal.

Ok Sirioz , #14 you are retarded You are told the man running AWAY from him , and yes even when you do nothing wrong when a cop of that size runs at you , you would run . He runs you run faster ....he diddent run faster he ran at him pounded him into a wall and put him in a coma . no one said he was armed and dangerous they said the cops were looking for people involved in a fight , not that any one was armend and dangerous and also look at the video he diddent even run he walked a little faster to the right and why because theres a bloody steam train running at him with a elbow out , pure police stupidity and burtality you can even see him putting up his arm in defense.

At the very least this officer should be fired and at best tried for attempted manslaughter. Excessive use of force is an irresponsibility afforded by exactly the attitude expressed by his superior. If there is no punishment for police officers with criminal intent, then of course this type of thing will occur. People in positions of authority will always abuse their power if they have no proper oversight. I say that officer should be charged and held fully accountable for his actions in a court of law.
Then maybe other officers may instead choose to ask questions first and THEN shoot later.

If the kid knocked the officer into a coma...I think it would have not been "just a tragic accident" and the kid would have ended up in jail...but the officer is "special" and he has a license to kill... makes me SICK !

I don't actually see much running here. The poor guy is right in front of a door inside some kind of mall. Imagine yourself in a mall, just in front of a door and some cops running in the direction of that door. Wouldn't you try to get out of their way AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE?
Do that kind of thing to a cop and try to call it an accident before his partners bullet hits you.

#27 My goodness , the beat-down that gang of British cops gave that poor fellow was ten times worse than the shove given in the coma video.One of the cops looked to be punching the fellow in the back of the head which can kill or cause brain damage.With their knees they were grinding the poor sap into the pavement.Then they would back-off and taz him again! This looked as bad as the Rodney King incident.
This type of behavior occurs all over the world and some of it could be avoided if suspects would just follow police instructions.

Uhm.. It was just an accident. I am quite sure the copper just wanted to knock him down as the kid was targetted as a possible suspect.

The people that have the initial instinct to flee when a cop advances are the ones that have a reason to run to begin with. People like me who would be innocent of anything would stand there and speak to the officer to figure it out.

Enough about instinct. This has nothing to do with instinct. Every action was premeditated by the cops. The only instinct I saw in the video was the guy stop dead in his tracks. Showing your hands clearly to the police does not involve instinct, it's the result of a thought.
Maybe you guys in America learned this automatism, to play nice with the cops right from the start, but in other parts of the world, where people very rarely have to deal with cops, these things don't come natural.

There are a few ill considered words above, not mentioning which ones. As far as I can see from the vid the guy doesn't appear to be on the run from anything, he could as well be runnig towards something or somewhere. The policeman appers from his left side and the guy turns toward him which suggest that he might not be fully (or not at all) aware of what is going on. The policeofficer tackles him front on. If the guy was runnig from the officer he would be in a straight line away from the police and also should have been tackled from the rear. Further; there's nothing in this guys posture that could be seen as resisting arrest. There is obiously nothing but unrequired exessive force from this particular officer.
And to point out another aspect. This is an action by a single individual and not what is common by the vast majority of US law enforcement personel. I have met their colleagues in several European nations and in some US states. And from the latter I can only say that they may be sometimes very authoritative but always being respectful. Some have been very polite and friendly. So its wrong to assume that american poiceofficers are a bunch of brainless bullies, this is only poor considered prejudice. And in the end - the person in coma was in fact innocent. Any ideas what guilty or not guilty persons should or should not do in such situations are pure speculations... This person have rights and should have been approached accordingly by this officer. The person talking to the media shows very poor judgement in choise of words; he should just stated that this is a tragic incident and there is no reason to offer any other statements pending an ongoing investigation. Wrong words can trigger lots of violente response from some groups

Yesish accident, no, it isn't just any accident, the police man should be tried for manslaughter. They should really learn what appropriate use of force means, he could have just grabbed him. As long as coppers don't get good training, do not know how to differentiate between normal peeps and heavy criminals, these things will continue to happen and THAT is certainly not an accident nor is it something anyone should condone. Those who do are absolutely criminals and thugs in my view.
Push THEM into a coma, they think it's all right! I'm sure that when they wake up ( if they wake up) they won't press charges.
With scenes like these, can you blame anyone, innocent or guilty, running away from the police?
That society is sick, ergo, it is neither an incident nor really an accident.

That was extremely excessive but no matter how good the training a few bad apples will always get through. I would have thought a "Police, Stop or i will shoot" would get the job done much better. That is also by far the worst PR statement i have ever seen, no apology or anything.
#27 that is a very harsh video, the punching to the head was not called for, prehaps the police in that vid require some basic science lessons, electricity causes muscles to contract so shouting put your arms out and then stunning him with taser 2 seconds later is kinda counter productive.......

It says he 'ran'. I don't see that in the video - not running as if to escape, but just retreating in reaction to someone coming at him agressively. Maybe there was more 'running' before the clip. No way to know from this.
I don't think injuries was the intent, but simply to knock the kid down - not "abuse of power" or "excessive force".
The people who think it was excessive are NOT thinking it through, but reacting emotionally to the sight of an innocent person being put into a coma.
THINK IT THROUGH. TRY TO BALANCE YOUR JUDGMENTS.
YES THAT COP MIGHT BE AN JERK, AS SO MANY ARE ...
... but did he act irresponsibly?
... do you think he meant to even mildly injure the kid?
... if so why would he hope to injure him at least a little?
... if it HAD been the kid who knifed another person, would you feel the same about the whole incident?
If you are going to judge, it is your moral responsibility TO THINK, not simply feel!
Your feelings come from what you think, and to feel appropriately about this whole incident, you must know enough about it, and think enough about it.
Judgments on some aspects must be HELD until you know.
