MythBusters did this with equipment only available i think in the 1700s. they built it out of plywood. They attempted to catch things on fire and failed. They couldn't get a concentrated enough beam of light to any one spot. I think it was the "Death Ray" myth.

P.s. this is a time lapsed vid when the 'steel' is melting \ and the sound is edited in, makes it seem cooler i suppose.

#2, there are lots of ways to get heat. It's converting it to usable energy that's difficult. We'll need thousands of those devices to produce the equivalent amount of electricity using fossil fuel.

Archimedes apparently did this in ancient Greece... Don't think he was this successful.
