wow...did he just start chopping without deciding where he wants it to fall? I hope so because if he actually thought it was going to fall the other way then I am really glad he is living in a remote area.

cant see how it can be so hard to first make a cut in the direction the tree should fall in and then start from the opposite side of the cut, atleast thats how we do in sweden and i guess that the americans dosn't seem to be as smart as everyone else since theres more than one video of a redneck destroying his own house with a tree, no offence non-stupid americans

you could have tied a rope and pull on it in the direction you wanted the tree to fall you know....but guess that's to complicated for the retard with the chainsaw

Believe he tried to do it the right way but as #(removed comment) points out the tree appears to lean towards the house ... And for #12 - so this has never happend in sweden? ... Man kanske skulle ta och lägga upp några klantigheter från sverige - men då fick man ju skämmas som fan över en del jubel-idioter. Som den gången då de klarade att klyva ett hus med en mobilkran som välte... osv osv.... Don't call others stupid - cuz it could backfire real bad...

the pro's work from top to bottom. small branches first, then the bigger ones (where they use cranes and chanes attached to the pieces before they get cut of) .. piece by piece. a tree like that can take 1-6 hours depending on the difficulty of the situation.
i'm shure the owner of the house will get a proffessional next time ^^.

#14 I'll be happy to...you'll be surprised how easy it is to pull the tree in a direction you want. The trick is to tie the rope at a high point, preferably higher than the middle of the tree and pull on it. There is no danger of the tree falling on you because you have plenty of time to sidestep.
There was a 800Kg pipe at a build site and a worker toppled it with one hand because he was pushing at the top of the pipe...
You don't know physics my friend ...mass has nothing to do with it, it's all about leverage and a pivot point.
The +1s you got just show how many people payed attention in physics class.
PS : If the tree is leaning or has many heavy branches on one side...and you want it to go the other way...you should use a tractor as #(removed comment) said.
And if it is a sever lean you have no choice but to stort cutting small pieces and branches...that can take all day.

#16 I'ts possible that some retard from sweden that got a summerhouse somewhere and thought he would be able to cut down a tree himself surely have elvered his house, but i've cut down many trees and as there are other discussing a rope tied at the top of any big tree is used for big trees, however a truck is only needed when then rope is tied more to the middle of the tree and it has a heavy lean to the "wrong" way. And as far as i can see on the video the lean of the tree can be countered by doing the "falling cut" way more to the right/left than it should be so the gravity will make the tree fall where you want. As stated in my previous post, its not rocket sience to cut a tree down.

#27 - I got somewhat anoyed by your comment about 'americans doesn't seem to be as smart as everyone else...' - just because you seen some vids of clumsy individuals you can't brand a whole population by that. And I know of some cases in Sweden where not 'a summerhouse' but homes been demolished. At one instance when they used a mobilecrane to move a load of rooftiles it all ended with a neighbours house demolished - and that was in the news some years ago... but that incident and some others (whith falling trees) haven't been posted on anywhere. And there's some from Norway as well .... But your'e right about the tree - its not rocket science

Well, nobody's perfect. I hope their house wasn't too badly damaged.
The tree appeared to be leaning toward the house. The way you make the cut can affect the direction the tree falls, but only to a certain extent. You can't completely defy gravity.
Some ways they could have approached this:
- Tie a long, strong rope about 2/3 of the way up the tree and use it to pull the tree in the direction you want it to fall. You'd be surprised at how big of a tree one man can pull over with a rope tied high in the tree.
- Instead of trying to make it fall completely opposite from the way it was leaning, they could have made the back cut on the side of the tree facing the camera, so the tree would fall in the direction away from the camera, but not directly toward the house. But I'd still use a rope just to play it safe.
- Climb the tree (using hooks and a belt - never a ladder) and cut the branches off on the way up, until you're high enough to safely drop the top. Then cut the trunk in pieces on the way back down. That tree had enough room around it to make this fairly quick and easy.
In Sweden, they would never have a tree fall on a house like that. They would dismantle the house and move it out of the way first.

#30 - Your'e right. Nobodys perfect and its not only gravity that can cause probs... even sudden winds. A swedish friend of mine told about when he was a kid his neighbour was cutting down some trees the way you explains. When cutting the top of the last tree a sudden heavy breeze got the top sideways (yes! They had a rope tied to it) and blew it sideways and it speared thru the roof of their house. Fortunately no one was injured.... ... so moving the house is perhaps a good idea - why not move the entire neighbourhood as well?

#28 I'm not only using this and the other tree-fail vids as proof of americans not being above average on the smart-o-meter. I dont know if you've seen Jay Leno Show and the "Jaywalking" parts of the show when they go out on the streets and ask everyday americans about stuff that everyone else knows but apperantly not an ordinary american :/.

#32 Seen a lot of Jay Leno (lol!) ... but if you go out on any street in any location around the world you will be able to find a certain number of people that will make any 'smart-o-meter' go nuts. America has a very large population, and further - they love to show up them. In other nations its perhaps regarded as to embarassing to show them on TV...
