I think if you were to swap the Stig into the veyron and Hammond into the Mc Claren you would see a very different outcome, where there would be more than alot in it.

Still using gasoline and rubber to get around, eh?
Oh boy! We have really come far in the past 15 years!
(OMG get my magnetic powered crotch rocket from Japan, Jeeves!)

#5 it's top gear (read the title!)
An who says Top Gear never provides us with useful consumer advice...
Over the standard drag race strip, Which is 1/4th of a mile, The McLaren still wins. The Bugatti didn't get wound up till after 1/2 a mile.
I say the real winner is still the McLarem F1 in a "Drag Race".
Top gear wanted the Bugatti to win, That is why they chose a 1 mile course instead of the standard 1/4 mile. IMHO
#9 agree they wanted it to win and id rather the f1 any day all those gadgets in the bugatti ....who needs a bloody radio at 400km+ you aint going to be able to hear it anyways ![]()
And if 15 years got them about 20meters after a mile ....well what have they been doing , a few hundred hp more and thats all ....id like to see a veyron on a diet and see what it does

Ha ha, funny comparison between idiots and drivers. Idiots think speed and winning in the end, with your own rules is fun. Fun is shifting through the gears and feeling the power under your ass. When time slows down and your car is going into a spin and "rack and pinion steering+ would be nice and a rear wheel blows and that logging truck isn't slowing up.... which car would you want to be in? One where you have control or one where all you have to do is stomp the pedal? Heheh I survived in a 1971 1200 fastback.
I've been there and done that +.
Buggati sounds like an out of control piece of modern engineering/driver thinking!
The McLaren sounds like the old 1971 240Z Datsun I had after the 1974 260Z and the 1972 240Z. Back when I was productive. Bleach!! Buggati? I vote McLaren for fun and survivability
Sounds to me that when you put a Bug off the road that all the components have is to debate and then decide what to do for your safety. Doh! I'll keep my hand on the stick.. PLEASE? I vote McLaren. I vote for control. The guy in the McLaren had a hell of a lot more fun than the guy who stomped the gas!
I'd rather be in the McLaren
#12 That wing comes up at speeds over 140mph to provide down-force to keep the car planted on the road. It also acts as an air-brake when the brakes are applied at speeds over 120mph by changing its angle to cause more drag.
#12 this is ripped off http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Veyron
The car's everyday top speed is listed at 350 km/h (220 mph). When the car reaches 220 km/h (140 mph), hydraulics lower the car until it has a ground clearance of about 9 cm (3.5 in.). At the same time, the wing and spoiler deploy. This is the "handling mode", in which the wing helps provide 3,425 newtons (770 lbf) of downforce, holding the car to the road, and helping the Bugatti Veyron perform 1.34 g forces on a 300 foot skidpad.[14]

#14 so bassically you create even more traction. Making the car even less efficient. I'd rather see them make even lighter cars and efficient cars like mclaren that have a more then 2% fuel efficiency to actually push the car forward.
so much is lost due to air and friction why create even more friction. Thats why they need a ton of extra horse power to match the mclaren.
Mclaren wins for me both fuel efficiency and smartness. The first carbon based car. THEY made the real progress. Going back to metals is going back a century to steam powered cars.
#15 It needs to add more traction - this car isn't meant to just go in straight lines. The spoiler coming up allows it to take corners at high speeds and literally stick to the track.
Well, McLaren is still fast for by standers... lol! and sexy as well. I'm SATISFIED with McLaren here.... Buggati looks to me like a FAT YAKUZA Master.... arrogant !!!!
This is the most awesome automotive motion I've ever seen, I'd like to have those two toys in the garage
It's possible to disable "handling mode" and enter "top speed mode", where
"... the car sinks down even lower on its suspension, until ground clearance has been reduced to a mere 2.6 inches in front and 2.8 in the rear. This setup also causes the front underbody flaps to close and the rear spoiler and wing to retract, although the wing remains tilted out of the body at a slight two-degree angle. These changes reduce the car's drag coefficient from 0.41 to 0.36, and they reduce the peak downforce from 770 to 120 pounds."

How lucky is the Hamster to get to drive both those cars in one day. The Buggati is the worlds fastest road car. Did anyone see the show were they made Capt. Slow take its to its top speed. It was ppure class

chances of any of us getting one of those = 0%
chances of any of us dying of boredom seeing these videos = 1%
i know... "don't watch it then" - too late for that

#20 yeah that James May video is pure win.
however, the SSC Ultimate Aero has already trumped the Bugatti's top speed.
Dude stop talking and concentrate on driving, maybe then the McLaren wouldn't have taken a head start.
I love the McLaren still though!!

I was surprised the Mc Claren got a head start, but once the Hamster wound up that Veyron....... there wasnt a lot in it really. not to say the advances in technology in the last 15 years.
