This is a Hempel cube, so named after its inventor George Hempel.

I liked how he went from NOT being able to see the illusion, to being able to see it :P

George Hempel began life as an illiterate farm worker, but soon discovered an extraordinary talent for painting cubes which did not actually exist. His most famous one can be found on the South face of the Eiffel tower in Paris, and can only be viewed properly from within an aircraft in level flight, travelling at a height of 120 feet.

He got another vid like that too...with a big X crossing the entry where the bike stands. Looks like blue sticky tape crossing the entry

easy to do:
- get a projector
- put the projector in the position of the eyes of the viewer
- project in direction of your choice
- fix projector
- draw lines on wall (he's using tape)

Nooitaf is correct in suggesting this method of producing a Hempel Cube. His instructions would certainly produce a cube. However, please bear in mind that the great man himself never used any additional equipment whatsoever. All of his cubes were painted freehand. George Hempel died in 1983 after being struck by lightning while completing a cube on top of the Empire State Building. His body was laid to rest in Kommenhaff Cemetery in Berlin. The 90% completed cube was left as a memorial to the great man. It can only be viewed properly from the moon.

something like this is easy to make,
just take a projector, project a cube on the wall,
then trace the outlines, and go look at it from the beamers point of view.

#7 sounds a lot like walking back and forth all day. i bet hempel was in good shape. well he could have done it with a pinhole camera, a stencil and a candle 8-)

#1 #3 #7 ... troll spotted :D Searching for "George Hempel" or "Hempel Cube" on Google yields almost no results: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Hempel+Cube%22. Also, the Kommenhaff Cemetery does not exist.

The Empire State Building can in fact be seen from the moon. A simple thought experiment will prove this easily. If you are standing on top of the building and looking skywards on a clear night, will you be able to see the moon? I suspect the answer to that question will be a resounding "yes". Therefore it is obvious that anyone standing on the surface of the moon would also be able to see the Empire State Building, albeit with a powerful enough telescope.

The 90% completed cube was destroyed when Godzilla attacked the city.
They tried to replicate it but no one had the capability(nor the will) to do so.

It was King Kong, not Godzilla. And only 90% of the 90% complete cube was destroyed. This left 81% remaining, which is still sufficient to view from the moon.

#21 If 90% of 90% was destroyed, then only 9% remains. The moon is retired now anyway.

Oh dear.
Let me see if I understand this correctly.
You've executed a ban. BTW, isn't 'executed' such a lovely word? It has a 'power' feel to it doesn't it? I imagine you were on the brink of an orgasm when you typed it.
Where was I? Oh yes, so now my ban has been 'executed', does that mean I will be unable to make any more comments?... like this one?
Goodness. How tiresome.
