Imagic: "even THAT girl"......WTF? Do you live in Iran where women are cosseted? Hell, I'm a woman and over 60: Since my teen years, I've bungeed, skydived, and anything the "boys" were doing. I am still a pilot, drive speedboats, sports cars and generally do whatever strikes my fancy without fear. And, you say "even THAT girl" - how insulting.

#18 the second rope is for safety,
because you "swing" it's unlikely to chop off anything ;-)
this is an old method, done by people years before all this
bungee etc stuff come up.
normally it works best with high bridges.
some "climber" knowledge is required for the setup etc

#16 ...jesus take a chill pill i dont think what he said was that bad , i dont even think he ment it in a sexist way if he did well your right but to say some one has balls its kinda wrong to say it about a woman because well you dont have any(and you know what i mean im not being a prick ) , and ps i bought my mom the best 50th birthday gift ever , a tandem para jump , she still hates me for it but she still did it mainly becasue it cost a fortune and they let her have a few hot whiskeys first to stop her from shakin

It looks like they are using standard perlon climbing rope. Nylon 6. 11mm.
Using two ropes will make the stop at the bottom of the fall twice as abrupt, which means that the climber will feel it twice as hard at the harness contact points. The two ropes could wrap around each other, or the climber could get his/her neck caught between the ropes. Will let you think about that. See comment by #18. It is very unlikely that one rope would fail. Using two ropes introduces more danger, and doubles the stopping force, which means that all points of the rigging see twice the loads, including the anchor, and the climber, harness, attaching hardware, slings, etc.
There are other possibilities in their rigging which could lead to an accident.
Life is more precious and deserves more respect than doing stupid stunts like this. Not impressive. And yes, I have done many high angle stunts. No point to taking this kind of risk.

Adding to my previous comment.
It is very unlikely that one rope would fail. However, that depends on the fall factor, length of the fall, weight of the climber, and how many times the fall is repeated. Climbing ropes are rated for a certain number of falls, based on a fall factor of 1.78. Keep doing it over and over again, even with less severe falls, and they WILL snap.

#22 You say "Using two ropes introduces more danger, and doubles the stopping force, which means that all points of the rigging see twice the loads, including the anchor, and the climber, harness, attaching hardware, slings, etc."
I do not see that being the case. The anchor point would see no real difference I think since the load is the same, and the strain on each rope would be only half since the load is divided between 2 ropes. Since nylon has some elasticity for shock absorption doubling the lines WILL cause the person to feel more stopping force.

if you don't see the point in my message,,, get out of here then, you are to old to watch, go skydive or something
for a girl like that i never will be insulting, it's what they try to call humor. and if there is something wrong with the spelling, read over it, not everyones first language is english you know.

#31:
The stopping force is the same on the anchor as it is at the end of the rope. Doubling the ropes does increase the stopping force by a factor of two, because the falling person will stop in half the time.
If a steel cable was used rather than 11mm nylon climbing rope, it would likely kill the climber from the high stopping force, and also likely cause the anchor to fail from the extremely high loads, unless the steel cable snaps first...

Organs inside the human body start to shear apart at around 1300 ft-lbs.
This has been known for many years, through cadaver studies conducted by the US Air Force.
So even if the harness stops the climber, his/her body will keep going internally - i.e., shearing apart internally. That is why medical researchers at OHSU have been concerned about the longterm health of bungee-jumpers, for example. Micro-tears in their hearts were discovered, and the longterm effect of these tears are unknown, at least at the time of this particular research - which I believe was approx. 15 years ago.

Imagic: I got your point.....you probably never get off your couch so it is irrelevant to me. I didn't say anything about your spelling, but will: "you are to old to watch"......that would be "TOO old to watch"......work on your English before you post again, punky.

I did not say it was a 'gallows drop'. Calculating the stopping force requires a differential equation. Yes, there is a drop, followed by a swing motion, which transmits some of the fall energy into those vector components. There have been some deaths due to rope jumps. Dan Osman, Bobby Tarver, there may be others.
