Good Idea, but I think, if someone doesn't have a lighter or matches with him and needs to put on a fire, he won't be having steel wool and a battery with him...
This is something for MacGyver to do. He would find both things lying around next to each other in the wilderness. ![]()

I thought this was common knowledge? Maybe not.
Not to be recommended on car batteries when the battery is still in the car!! (I found out when I decided to clean my +ve terminal with wire wool) Just make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy should your pyromania get the better of you
!!!!!!!!!!

Wire wool makes amazing itching powder, just get a piece and rub it together, - small wire flakes fall out. It works best if you do it down the back of someones collar then and there rather than preparing it in advance.
WARNING - Very strong itching powder!!!!! Doesn't take affect straight away, but just gets worse and worse and worse!!!!!!

Oldest trick in the book , but hey get a transistor a watch with a beep alarm and you can set buildings on fire with out even being around and total cost to make device few dollars ,watching your friends shed burn down ........priceless ![]()
#3 ehh this doesent work very well in wet weather or even wind as the wire wont get hot if theres strong wind , also survivalists and boy scouts (used to be one) dont go round carrying that crap , the most important thing you can have and something that will all ways work is simple flint stone , doesent need battery never goes dead

That's interesting, but it looks like that much steel wool is only good for one fire. If you carried a dozen steel wool pads and an extra battery you could start a dozen fires. But I think 500 matches and two or three Bic lighters would be easier to carry and good for a lot of fires - and you'd have plenty just for playing around with.
