They are doing this to cheat their way into penalty kicks and or yellow/red cards for the opposing faction. It does work from time to time since the referee isn't always in the best position to see what really happened.

One way to decrease the fakes: If a player is caught faking via replay, the faked injury is inflicted as penalty.
