#13, how is this strictly american culture?

i'll say this again, just as i do with everyone else that likes to use that unoriginal line, "american etc"..

im not a huge fan of most americans or the government (for reasons that are definitely not limited to americans), but to say this is strictly "american" culture is just as ignorant as most americans..you go to any country and you will find that many males and some females are into burning tires, racing, and so on...

#13 and #19 no need to argue. You are both on the wrong track (excuse the pun). This was filmed at Summernats held in Canberra, Austrlaia early January every year. It's the biggest street machine festival in Australia and involves only road-legal vehicles. I can tell you with reasonable confidence, this is most definitely an example of Australian culture.

I was born in a country where not so long ago people were struggled for food. My grand parents used to say that no one is bigger then bread. They meant that bread is very hard to produce and one must treat it with respect. Now I see almost everyday in the american movies and videoclips how people (mostly young) are breaking, crushing, setting on fire cars, computers, cameras, fridges etc. without any necessarily. It's easy, because they haven't produced anything in their lives and don't know how hard is to make a single thing.
I hope (because they are obviously poorly educated) when they grow older to man?facture the same things that they was breaking. Breaking, burning things just for fun is disrespect to other people's labor. Especially by grown people. I doubt if someone from the public have ever read a single book in their lives.
Sorry for the anger. I know that I can't change anything, but I just can't stay quiet.

As a semi-intelligent Australian I hereby apologise for the fact that yes, this is an example of the type of brain-dead yobbo culture you can find here. Summernats.... for tossers and cretins only.

IMHO I will have to disagree with those who have to take issue with this display.
1. The car (in most cases) was built by the driver/owner for this purpose and seeing that it is his money, it's his business to do what he wants to it...not good for anything else anyway
2. The only difference between this type of destructive hobby and , let's say trial riding, is the cost of the vehicle used. Both eventually get broken. One just costs more to repair than the other.
3. This "sport" is not for all people. If you don't like it, don't watch it, it's that simple. "Different strokes" and such...

#26 Believe it or not, I do understand and appreciate where you are coming from but please consider this, This person spends his money to build this powerful machine to do what he wants with it, as is shown here. When he breaks his expensive toy, he will pay more money to those who sell the parts, who pay the people who made the parts, putting more money in their pockets and more food on their families tables. The only person losing out in this instance is the car's owner.

And I am also sorry for the rant... -1 is over there --> :D

#30 You have been misunderstood me. The driver is just a man who does it for living. There is nothing wrong with this. Everybody wants to survive somehow. People watching and enjoying this were my target. I can't be angry to a tiger for wanting to eat me. He tries to survive. I am angry to those that think that it's amazing watching this. They say - what a fun. But when the tiger jumps on them, they cry - HELP! How this cruel bad thing is allowed to break in my life. It's a long story and it's not the place to discuss it. And my English is not so good.
#(removed comment) My country is Bulgaria.
And I'll watch when some heavy drunk "good 'ol redneck" starts to kick you in the head because he is bored, has nothing to say and wants "some fun".
Picture of LB18743 achievements

+3 35. LB187 commented 14 years ago

#34 Some may say otherwise, your English is OK... keep practicing and you will get better...

Most people that do this, do it for a hobby, not a living.
I have built 5 vehicles similar to this one in my lifetime. 4 for other people and one for myself(1000+HP Chevy S-10). Long story >:)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion...

#33 >:) Big thumbs up!

Good that tires are made with mineral oil wich we have an infinite ammount of and the air cleans itself...so its no problem to waste tires >:)

Impressive to watch anyways :)

You will note at the end when the tires catch fire, that it is not due to friction.
Look carefully, you will see that it is the result of shortened exhaust pipes blowing onto the tires from underneath. Regardless, it makes for a good show. :)

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi! Yea baby, Don't care what you greenies say, we rock! This is a yearly comp held in Canberra and is THE no.1 car exhibition show on earth! Us Aussies do it better and don't care what the rest of the world thinks so stick it you greenie suckers! :D
Picture of LB18743 achievements

+2 42. LB187 commented 14 years ago

#40 That is a good theory but you need to account for these conditions:

1. Exhaust temperatures at the headers can reach 1000 degrees Fahrenheit but decrease rapidly for every foot of exhaust pipe.(touch the end of your tailpipe for a second when it has been running, not hot enough to ignite a fire.)

2. Big blocks with blowers normally run with a slightly "rich" fuel mixture which drastically reduces exhaust temperatures. (And the opposite is true, "lean" running engines run hotter and usually end up burning holes in the pistons and valves."

It's a good observation but considering these 2 facts, I don't think that it is the cause.
Picture of sux2bu67 achievements

+2 43. sux2bu commented 14 years ago

#42 Maybe the guy was running hydrazine. "Dyno" Don Nicholson ran that fuel in his Funny-car back in the sixties and the exhaust would sometimes set the "christmas tree" on fire.
Picture of LB18743 achievements

+1 44. LB187 commented 14 years ago

#43 I like your thinking but... I highly doubt that!

There would be visual evidence from the beginning of the burnout and it likely would not have lasted nearly as long...

But since we are guessing, maybe he had a James Bond style container that dumps a small amount of Thermite when he is ready to "Light Up The Tires"! >:)
Picture of mmwilhelm4 achievements

0 45. mmwilhelm commented 14 years ago

You're grossly over-thinking this. When you cook tires like that, you're making a highly-flammable petroleum distillate in the form of a vapor, then the tire shreds and it's the wheel on the pavement, shooting sparks into this gas. WHOOF.

No magic tricks, no 007 gadgetry.
