why is this gross? In my town, there's a restaurant called Juban's where the chef gets a crab that just shed its shell and deep fries it; it's called soft-shelled crab, and it tastes amazing.

i have actually seen that in my own aquarium once before, but wasn't really a crab, it was a lobster, rather cool to watch =)

Did you know that the crab then eats the skin it has shed?

Apparently, the skin contains lots of calcium

#1 and #3 all arthropods shred their shells since the chitenous armor wont allow them to grow ;)

Feel sorry for the mother having a kid bigger than she is... no wonder she died... LOL.

I use to have a pet crayfish and watching it shed was cool. They usually then eat the shell to get the good nutrients and calcium back so they can strengthen their new one.
